FAQs
Answers to Popular Questions About Daktacort
What is Daktacort?
Daktacort is a topical cream containing two active ingredients: miconazole nitrate 2% (an antifungal) and hydrocortisone 1% (a mild corticosteroid). It is used to treat skin conditions involving both fungal infection and inflammation, such as infected eczema, intertrigo (rash in skin folds), and inflammatory fungal infections like athlete’s foot with significant inflammation. Daktacort cream is available over the counter as Daktacort HC (for athlete’s foot) or on prescription for other indications. It is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson.
How does Daktacort work?
Daktacort combines antifungal and anti-inflammatory action. Miconazole is an imidazole antifungal that kills fungi by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of the fungal cell membrane, causing the cell to break down and die. It is effective against dermatophytes, yeasts (including Candida), and some Gram-positive bacteria. Hydrocortisone is a mild corticosteroid that reduces the inflammation, redness, and itching associated with the infection, providing rapid symptom relief while the antifungal treats the underlying cause.
How do I apply Daktacort cream?
Apply a thin layer of Daktacort cream to the affected area twice daily (morning and evening), gently rubbing it in. The skin should be clean and dry before application. Continue treatment for at least 7 days after the symptoms have cleared to ensure the fungal infection is fully eradicated. The hydrocortisone component means Daktacort should ideally not be used for more than 7 days on the face or 2 weeks on the body, unless directed by a prescriber.
Where can Daktacort be applied?
Daktacort can be applied to affected areas of the body including the groin, between skin folds, under the breasts, between the toes, and on the body. It can be used cautiously on the face for short periods. It should not be applied to broken or ulcerated skin, the eyes, or mucous membranes. For nappy rash with suspected fungal infection (Candida), Daktacort may be prescribed on medical advice. Avoid using occlusive dressings over Daktacort unless directed.
What are the side effects of Daktacort?
Daktacort is generally well-tolerated. Uncommon side effects include mild burning, stinging, or irritation at the application site. Allergic contact dermatitis is rare. With prolonged use, the hydrocortisone component can cause mild skin thinning, particularly on the face or in skin folds. Because hydrocortisone 1% is the mildest steroid, the risk of serious skin damage is low with appropriate short-term use. If irritation persists or worsens, stop using Daktacort and consult your prescriber.
Can I buy Daktacort without a prescription?
Daktacort HC (for athlete’s foot specifically) is available over the counter from pharmacies. For other indications, a prescription may be needed. A pharmacist can advise whether the OTC product is suitable for your condition. If your symptoms are more complex, or if the affected area is not the feet, your GP or an online service like NowPatient can provide a prescription for the full range of Daktacort uses.
Can I use Daktacort during pregnancy?
Mild topical corticosteroids like hydrocortisone and topical miconazole are generally considered low risk in pregnancy when used on small areas for short durations. However, always consult your doctor or midwife before using Daktacort during pregnancy. Your prescriber can advise on the most appropriate treatment for your condition during pregnancy.
How can I get Daktacort?
Daktacort HC is available OTC from pharmacies for athlete’s foot. For broader use, Daktacort can be prescribed by your GP or through NowPatient’s online service, with convenient home delivery.
