MEDICAL INFORMATION

Fucidin H Key Facts

About Fucidin H cream

Fucidin H is a topical treatment containing two active ingredients. Fusidic acid, an antibiotic and hydrocortisone acetate, a steroid (and an anti-inflammatory). Fusidic acid prevents bacteria from multiplying, afterwitch they either die off or are killed by the immune system. Hydrocortisone prevents the skin from becoming inflamed by constricting blood vessels, reducing the release of chemicals that cause swelling. Fucidin H cream helps to clear up infected skin and is used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Fucidin H cream is a prescription only medication. NowPatient offers Fucidin H cream as a treatment for psoriasis only, following an online consultation with a prescribing clinician.

FAQs

Answers to Popular Questions About Fucidin H

What is Fucidin H cream?

Fucidin H is a prescription-only topical cream containing two active ingredients: fusidic acid 2% (an antibiotic) and hydrocortisone acetate 1% (a mild corticosteroid). It is used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis that have become infected with bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus. The fusidic acid component treats the bacterial infection while the hydrocortisone reduces inflammation, redness, and itching. Fucidin H is manufactured by LEO Pharma.

How does Fucidin H work?

Fucidin H works through a dual mechanism. Fusidic acid is an antibiotic that kills staphylococcal bacteria by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis — it binds to elongation factor G, preventing the bacteria from producing proteins needed for growth and reproduction. Hydrocortisone is a mild corticosteroid that reduces the inflammatory immune response in the skin, relieving the redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort of eczema or dermatitis. Together, they address both the infection and the underlying inflammation.

When should Fucidin H be used?

Fucidin H is specifically indicated for eczema and dermatitis that show signs of bacterial infection — these include weeping, crusting, yellow discharge, increased redness, or pustules. It should not be used for uninfected eczema (use hydrocortisone alone) or for bacterial skin infections without underlying eczema (use fusidic acid alone or an appropriate antibiotic). Fucidin H is intended for short-term use only — typically no more than 2 weeks — to avoid promoting antibiotic resistance to fusidic acid.

How do I apply Fucidin H cream?

Apply a thin layer of Fucidin H cream to the affected area two to three times daily, gently rubbing it in. The area should be clean and dry before application. Use only a small amount — enough to cover the affected area thinly. Wash your hands before and after application. Treatment should be limited to a maximum of 2 weeks to reduce the risk of bacterial resistance to fusidic acid. If symptoms persist beyond 2 weeks, consult your prescriber.

How long should I use Fucidin H for?

Fucidin H should be used for a maximum of 2 weeks per course. This time limit is important because prolonged use of topical fusidic acid promotes the development of bacterial resistance. If the infection clears before 2 weeks, you can stop Fucidin H and switch to a plain emollient or a mild steroid (such as hydrocortisone 1% alone) for ongoing eczema management. If the infection has not cleared after 2 weeks, see your prescriber for reassessment and possible alternative treatment.

What are the side effects of Fucidin H?

Fucidin H is generally well-tolerated. Uncommon side effects include mild skin irritation, burning, stinging, or itching at the application site. Allergic contact dermatitis (rash, swelling) is rare but possible. With prolonged or excessive use, the hydrocortisone component can cause skin thinning, particularly on the face or skin folds. The risk is lower than with stronger steroids as hydrocortisone is the mildest corticosteroid. Do not apply to large areas of skin or under occlusive dressings unless directed.

Can I use Fucidin H on my face?

Yes, Fucidin H can be used on the face for short courses (up to 2 weeks) as it contains only mild-potency hydrocortisone. However, facial skin is thin and more susceptible to steroid side effects, so use the minimum amount needed and do not extend treatment beyond the recommended duration. Avoid the eye area. For ongoing facial eczema without infection, your prescriber may recommend emollients and mild steroids instead.

Can I use Fucidin H during pregnancy?

Short courses of Fucidin H on small areas are generally considered low risk in pregnancy, as hydrocortisone is a mild steroid and topical fusidic acid has minimal systemic absorption. However, always consult your doctor or midwife before using Fucidin H during pregnancy, particularly on large areas or for prolonged periods. Your prescriber can advise on the most appropriate treatment for infected eczema during pregnancy.

How can I get Fucidin H?

Fucidin H is a prescription-only medicine available on the NHS from your GP or dermatologist. It can also be prescribed through online services like NowPatient, which provides convenient online consultations with qualified UK prescribers and home delivery.
