How Other Useful Resources Work

What Are the Other Useful Resources?

Other Useful Resources is a comprehensive collection of trusted NHS health information covering a wide range of health topics. The service provides access to clinically reviewed guidance on contraception, medicines, mental health, pregnancy, vaccinations, women’s health, and more. All content is curated by the NHS to help you understand symptoms, conditions, treatments, and make confident health decisions.

This service is free and available to all registered NowPatient users. Unlike Personalized Learning, which auto-curates content matched to your conditions, Other Useful Resources gives you open access to the complete NHS health information library on any topic, regardless of your Health Profile.

What Resources Are Available?

Conditions A to Z

In-depth, NHS-verified guidance on hundreds of health conditions. Each condition page explains symptoms, causes, diagnosis, treatment options, prevention, recovery tips, and when to get help. This is reliable information for understanding long-term conditions, acute illnesses, and everything in between.

Symptoms A to Z

Clear information to help you understand what your symptoms might mean. Each symptom guide explains possible causes, recommended self-care, red flags to look out for, and when to seek urgent or emergency help. An accessible way to make sense of how you are feeling.

Tests and Treatments A to Z

Easy-to-understand explanations of medical tests, procedures, and treatments. Learn what to expect from tests like blood work, X-rays and scans, and treatments ranging from medication to surgery. Each guide covers how the test works, preparation, risks, benefits, and recovery.

Medicines A to Z

Reliable NHS guidance about medicines and how to use them safely. Each medicine entry explains what it is used for, how to take it, possible side effects, interactions, safety warnings, pregnancy considerations, and how it works.

Mental Health

Supportive and practical information about mental wellbeing and mental health conditions. This includes guidance on anxiety, depression, stress, panic attacks, and other common conditions, plus tips on coping, self-care techniques, and how to find professional support.

Live Well

Advice on healthy living and small daily changes that make a big difference. Topics include exercise, nutrition, sleep, weight management, quitting smoking, alcohol guidance, and overall wellbeing. Content focuses on practical tips you can apply right away.

Pregnancy

Trusted guidance covering the entire pregnancy journey. From trying for a baby and early pregnancy symptoms to antenatal appointments, labour, birth, and early postnatal care. This section provides week-by-week information and reassurance.

Contraception

Clear explanations of available contraception options and how they work. Includes the pill, implant, IUD, injection, condoms, and more. Each page covers effectiveness, pros and cons, risks, side effects, and help choosing the right option.

Vaccinations

Accurate NHS advice about vaccines for babies, children, adults, and travel. Covers how vaccines work, what they protect against, the UK immunisation schedule, safety information, side effects, and why staying up to date matters.

Women’s Health

Information focused on health conditions and topics particularly relevant to women. Includes menstrual health, menopause, fertility, pelvic health, contraception, pregnancy, cancer screenings, and common conditions like endometriosis and PCOS.

Baby

Practical, reassuring NHS advice for caring for your newborn or young baby. Covers feeding, sleeping, development milestones, common baby illnesses, vaccinations, safety tips, and when to seek medical advice.

Can I Search Within Resources?

Yes. Most resource categories include search functionality, allowing you to quickly find specific topics, conditions, medicines, or symptoms you are interested in learning about.

How Is This Different From Personalized Learning?

Other Useful Resources provides access to the complete NHS health information library, allowing you to browse any topic regardless of your personal health profile. Personalized Learning, on the other hand, automatically curates content specifically matched to your conditions and medications. Both services complement each other: use Personalized Learning for targeted information about your health, and Other Useful Resources to explore any additional topics of interest.

Can I Access Resources Without Completing My Health Profile?

Yes. Other Useful Resources are available to all registered NowPatient users regardless of whether you have completed your Health Profile. These resources provide open access to NHS health information without personalization.

Is the Content Regularly Updated?

Yes. The content is curated by the NHS and regularly updated to reflect the latest clinical evidence, treatment guidelines, and health recommendations, ensuring you always have access to current, accurate health information.

When Should I Seek Professional Medical Advice Instead of Using Resources?

You should contact your doctor or seek emergency care if you have severe or worsening symptoms; experience symptoms marked as ‘red flags’ in the resource guides; need a diagnosis or personalized treatment plan; have concerns about your specific health situation; require prescription medications; or experience a medical emergency. Other Useful Resources provide educational information but cannot replace professional medical assessment and care.

Is the Other Useful Resources Service Free?

Yes. Other Useful Resources is a free service available to all registered NowPatient users.
