FAQs
Answers to Popular Questions About Zomig
What is Zomig?
Zomig is the brand name for zolmitriptan, a triptan used for the acute treatment of migraine. It is manufactured by Grünenthal and is available as Zomig tablets (2.5 mg), Zomig Rapimelt (2.5 mg orodispersible tablets that dissolve on the tongue), and Zomig nasal spray (5 mg). Zomig is a prescription-only medicine in the UK and is one of the most commonly prescribed triptans due to its range of formulations and good tolerability.
What is Zomig Rapimelt?
Zomig Rapimelt is an orodispersible tablet formulation of zolmitriptan 2.5 mg. It is placed on the tongue where it dissolves rapidly without the need for water. This makes it particularly convenient during a migraine when nausea may prevent swallowing a conventional tablet, or when water is not readily available. The dissolved tablet is absorbed through the gut (not the mouth lining), so onset of action is similar to conventional tablets. Many patients prefer the Rapimelt for its convenience and ease of use.
Is Zomig available on the NHS?
Yes, Zomig and generic zolmitriptan are available on NHS prescription. Generic zolmitriptan is typically prescribed first as it is less expensive. If the branded formulation is specifically needed (for example, a patient strongly prefers the Rapimelt device), it can be prescribed. Your GP, neurologist, or online prescriber like NowPatient can issue a prescription.
How do I take Zomig?
For Zomig tablets: swallow one 2.5 mg tablet with water at the onset of migraine headache. For Zomig Rapimelt: peel back the foil, place the tablet on the tongue, and allow it to dissolve (no water needed). For Zomig nasal spray: one 5 mg spray into one nostril. If the migraine returns after initial relief, a second dose may be taken after 2 hours. Maximum: 10 mg in 24 hours (tablets) or 10 mg (nasal spray). Do not take a second dose if the first provides no relief.
What are the side effects of Zomig?
Common side effects include sensations of tingling, warmth, heaviness, tightness in the chest or throat, dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea. The nasal spray may cause taste disturbance and nasal irritation. Zomig Rapimelt may have a slightly different taste compared to conventional tablets. Side effects are usually mild and transient. Serious side effects are rare but include severe chest pain (seek urgent help) and allergic reactions.
Can I take Zomig with painkillers?
Yes, Zomig can be taken alongside simple analgesics such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, or aspirin for additional pain relief. Combining a triptan with an NSAID is a well-established strategy for improving migraine treatment response. Do not take Zomig with other triptans or ergotamine within 24 hours. Avoid using Zomig on more than 10 days per month to prevent medication-overuse headache.
How can I get Zomig?
Zomig requires a prescription and is available from your GP, neurologist, or through NowPatient’s online prescribing service. NowPatient offers online consultations for migraine treatment with convenient home delivery.
