About Kliovance
Kliovance tablets contains two active ingredients, estradiol, a natural version of oestrogen and norethisterone, a synthetic progestogen. It is classed as a HRT (hormone replacement therapy), used to treat the symptoms of menopause. Menopausal symptoms include:
- Osteoporosis
- Hot flushes, night sweats
- Depression, mood swings
- Sleep problems
- Vaginal dryness
Kliovance is a combined HRT treatment used in women who are suffering from menopause, but still have a menstrual cycle, and have not had a hysterectomy. If only oestrogen levels are increased during HRT treatment, the endometrium will grow excessively, causing an increased risk of endometrial cancer. Women who have not had a hysterectomy are therefore given HRT that contains progestogen.
NowPatient offers Kliovance as a treatment for HRT only, following an online consultation with a prescribing clinician.

Answers to Popular Questions About Kliovance
What is Kliovance?
Kliovance is a continuous combined hormone replacement therapy (HRT) containing oestradiol 1 mg and norethisterone acetate 0.5 mg in every tablet. It is designed to be taken every day without a break, and aims to provide bleed-free HRT for postmenopausal women. Kliovance is suitable for women who are at least 12 months past their last natural period. It is manufactured by Novo Nordisk and available on the NHS.
How does Kliovance work?
Kliovance provides a continuous dose of oestradiol to relieve menopausal symptoms (hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood changes) alongside a continuous low dose of norethisterone to protect the endometrium from thickening. Because the progestogen is given every day (rather than cyclically), the aim is to avoid a monthly withdrawal bleed. This makes it suitable for women who are fully postmenopausal.
What is the difference between Kliovance and Kliofem?
Both are continuous combined HRT products from Novo Nordisk. Kliovance contains oestradiol 1 mg/norethisterone 0.5 mg (lower dose), while Kliofem contains oestradiol 2 mg/norethisterone 1 mg (higher dose). Kliovance is generally tried first as it uses the lowest effective dose. If symptoms are not adequately controlled on Kliovance, your prescriber may switch to Kliofem.
How do I take Kliovance?
Take one tablet daily at the same time, continuously without any break. Each tablet is identical, so there is no specific starting day within the pack. If switching from sequential HRT, start Kliovance after completing the current pack. Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food.
When can I start Kliovance?
Kliovance is suitable for women who are at least 12 months past their last natural period (fully postmenopausal). Starting continuous combined HRT too early may cause irregular breakthrough bleeding. If you are perimenopausal (still having some periods), sequential HRT (such as Elleste Duet or Femoston) is more appropriate initially.
What are the side effects of Kliovance?
Common side effects include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, bloating, and mood changes. Breakthrough bleeding or spotting may occur in the first 3–6 months, particularly when switching from sequential HRT. If bleeding persists beyond 6 months, your prescriber should investigate. Leg cramps, fluid retention, and skin reactions are uncommon.
Will I have periods on Kliovance?
The aim of continuous combined HRT is to avoid monthly bleeding. Most women on Kliovance will have no periods after the initial settling-in phase. Some spotting or light bleeding may occur in the first 3–6 months, which usually resolves. If bleeding continues or starts after a period of no bleeding, see your prescriber for investigation.
