Activella is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should not take Activella if you are a woman who is over 35 years old and smoke. It should also not be used in women with any of the following medical conditions:
- Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding

- Active or history of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
- Stroke or myocardial infarction (heart attack) within the past year

Activella Serious Side Effects

Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following such as blood clots (trouble breathing, leg pain or swelling, skin that’s warm to the touch); heart attack (chest pain, arm pain, shortness of breath, cold sweats, lightheadedness); stroke (sudden weakness on one side of your body, drooping face, changes in your speech or vision, confusion, headache); high calcium levels (tiredness, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, constipation); low calcium levels (muscle spasms or twitching, numbness and tingling in your fingers, toes, or around your mouth); or unusual vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge, or pelvic pain.
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Activella
The following medications may interact with Activella:
- Inducers of CYP3A4 such as St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) preparations, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, and rifampin may reduce the levels and effects of Activella
- Inhibitors of CYP3A4 such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir and grapefruit juice may increase the levels and effects of Activella
