Blissel Gel is a prescription-only medication and may be recommended when other topical treatments have not been effective or are not well tolerated.

FAQs

Answers to Popular Questions About Blissel Gel

What is Blissel Gel?

Blissel Gel is a vaginal gel containing estriol 50 micrograms per gram, used for the treatment of vaginal atrophy (atrophic vaginitis) caused by oestrogen deficiency, typically in postmenopausal women. Estriol is a weak, short-acting natural oestrogen that acts locally on vaginal tissue to restore thickness, lubrication, and the normal acidic vaginal pH. Blissel is applied intravaginally using a calibrated applicator. It is a prescription-only medicine.

How does Blissel Gel work?

Blissel delivers low-dose estriol directly to the vaginal tissues. Estriol stimulates oestrogen receptors in the vaginal epithelium, promoting cell proliferation, increasing blood flow, restoring natural secretions, and lowering vaginal pH to the normal acidic range (which protects against infections). Because estriol is a weak, short-acting oestrogen with minimal systemic absorption, it has an excellent safety profile and does not require additional progestogen protection of the endometrium.

How do I use Blissel Gel?

Using the calibrated applicator, insert one dose (1 g of gel containing 50 mcg estriol) intravaginally once daily for 2–3 weeks, then reduce to twice weekly as maintenance. Apply at bedtime for convenience. Insert the applicator gently into the vagina and press the plunger to deliver the gel. Clean the applicator after each use. Improvement in symptoms (dryness, itching, discomfort during intercourse) is usually noticed within 2–3 weeks.

What are the side effects of Blissel Gel?

Side effects are generally mild and localised. Common effects include vaginal irritation, itching, or burning (particularly when first starting treatment). Breast tenderness and vaginal bleeding/spotting may occasionally occur. Systemic side effects are rare due to the minimal absorption of estriol. If vaginal bleeding occurs, especially if unexpected, consult your prescriber for investigation.

Is Blissel safe for breast cancer survivors?

Low-dose vaginal estriol products like Blissel have minimal systemic absorption and are generally considered safe. However, the use of any oestrogen-containing product in women with a history of oestrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer should be discussed with their oncologist. Some specialists do permit low-dose vaginal estriol in carefully selected patients. Non-hormonal alternatives include vaginal moisturisers and lubricants.

How can I get Blissel Gel?

Blissel Gel requires a prescription from your GP, menopause specialist, or online prescriber such as NowPatient. It is available on the NHS. Other vaginal oestrogen options (Vagifem tablets, Estring ring) are also available and your prescriber can advise on the most suitable formulation.

I do not leave reviews, due to time and a rare condition I have. I initially left a message, my call was returned within 2 hours or less. NowPatient offers 4 discount programs. I worked with Jay, he was genuine and wanted to help me all while giving me amazing customer service. Even though I didn't qualify, he gave me some suggestions and tips while encouraging me to follow up with the manufacturer along with other things I could do. This is the real deal, not a scam, and not a waste of your time. Amazing!! Thank you, Jay!
