About Livial
Livial tablets contain tibolone, which is broken down in the body into the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone. Livial also increases levels of testosterone, which helps to limit some of the side effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Livial is a HRT treatment used in postmenopausal women for the symptoms of menopause. If only estrogen levels are increased during HRT treatment, the endometrium would grow excessively, causing an increased risk of endometrial cancer. Livial helps to raise progesterone levels, reducing the risk of this side effect.
Livial helps to tteat menopausal symptoms such as:
- Osteoporosis
- Hot flushes, night sweats
- Depression, mood swings
- Sleep problems
- Vaginal dryness
NowPatient offers Livial tablets as a treatment for HRT only, following an online consultation with a prescribing clinician.

FAQs
Answers to Popular Questions About Livial
What is Livial?
Livial is a unique HRT product containing tibolone 2.5 mg. Tibolone is a synthetic steroid that has oestrogenic, progestogenic, and weak androgenic activity. It is used as a continuous, bleed-free HRT for postmenopausal women (at least 12 months since last period). Unlike conventional HRT that combines separate oestrogen and progestogen, tibolone acts as a single compound with tissue-selective activity. Livial is manufactured by Organon.
How does Livial work?
Tibolone is metabolised in the body into three active compounds with oestrogenic, progestogenic, and androgenic properties. The oestrogenic effects relieve menopausal symptoms and protect bone. The progestogenic effect protects the endometrium. The weak androgenic effect may help with low libido, which some postmenopausal women experience. Tibolone’s tissue-selective metabolism means it has minimal stimulatory effect on breast tissue and the endometrium.
What is the difference between Livial and standard HRT?
Livial differs from conventional HRT in several ways: it is a single compound rather than a combination product; it has androgenic as well as oestrogenic and progestogenic activity; it may have less breast tenderness than conventional HRT; and it may help with reduced sexual desire due to its androgenic component. However, it is generally less effective at relieving severe vasomotor symptoms than oestradiol-based HRT.
How do I take Livial?
Take one Livial tablet (2.5 mg) daily at the same time, continuously without a break. It should only be started at least 12 months after your last natural period. Swallow the tablet with water. It can be taken with or without food.
What are the side effects of Livial?
Common side effects include vaginal bleeding or spotting (particularly in the first months), abdominal pain, breast tenderness, and increased hair growth. Uncommon side effects include vaginal discharge, headache, migraine, dizziness, acne, and itching. Weight gain may occur. The androgenic effects may cause unwanted hair growth or acne in some women.
What are the risks of Livial?
Livial is associated with an increased risk of stroke, particularly in women over 60. It may also increase the risk of endometrial cancer and breast cancer recurrence (it should not be used in women with a history of breast cancer). The breast cancer risk with tibolone appears lower than with conventional combined HRT but higher than with oestrogen-only HRT. VTE risk may be slightly increased. Discuss all risks with your prescriber.
How can I get Livial?
Livial is available on NHS prescription from your GP, menopause specialist, or through online services like NowPatient. It may be particularly considered for women with low libido or those who do not tolerate conventional HRT. NowPatient offers online consultations and home delivery.
