About Zithromax

FAQs

Answers to Popular Questions About Zithromax

What is Zithromax?

Zithromax is the brand name for azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic manufactured by Pfizer. It is available as 250 mg and 500 mg tablets and as an oral suspension. Zithromax is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, skin infections, sexually transmitted infections (particularly chlamydia), and ear infections. It is a prescription-only medicine in the UK.

What is the difference between Zithromax and generic azithromycin?

Zithromax and generic azithromycin contain the same active ingredient at the same dose and are bioequivalent, meaning they work in the same way and produce the same clinical results. Generic azithromycin is typically significantly less expensive than branded Zithromax. Most UK prescriptions are now dispensed as generic azithromycin. There is no clinical reason to prefer branded Zithromax over the generic.

What is Zithromax used for?

Zithromax is commonly used for the treatment of chlamydia (often as a single 1 g dose), lower and upper respiratory tract infections including community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of COPD, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis media, and skin and soft tissue infections. It is also used off-label for various other infections. The convenient short-course dosing (typically 3–5 days) and long tissue half-life make it a practical choice for many infections.

How do I take Zithromax?

Dosing depends on the infection. For chlamydia: 1 g as a single dose. For respiratory and skin infections: 500 mg on day 1, then 250 mg daily on days 2–5 (total 1.5 g over 5 days), or 500 mg daily for 3 days (total 1.5 g). Take Zithromax at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after food for optimal absorption, although the tablets may be taken with food if nausea occurs. Swallow tablets whole with water.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue the course as prescribed. Do not double up on doses. Completing the full course is important to clear the infection and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.

What are the side effects of Zithromax?

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and headache. Uncommon side effects include dizziness, taste disturbance, and skin rash. Rare but serious side effects include QT prolongation (abnormal heart rhythm), hepatotoxicity (liver damage), and Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhoea. Allergic reactions including anaphylaxis are rare. If you experience severe diarrhoea, jaundice, or heart palpitations, seek medical attention immediately.

How can I get Zithromax?

Zithromax or generic azithromycin requires a prescription from your GP, sexual health clinic, or online prescriber such as NowPatient. For chlamydia treatment, free testing and treatment are available through NHS sexual health services. NowPatient provides convenient online consultations and discreet home delivery.
