Service Guide

Everything you need to know about Weight Loss Programs

Who are Weight Loss Programs for?

Weight Loss Programs is a private prescribing service which is designed for adults aged 18 years and over, who are experiencing health issues and who would like to receive a fast-track assessment and if applicable, a Weight Loss treatment from a qualified prescribing clinician. Treatments are dispensed and delivered to your home or workplace from our regulated online pharmacy.

Is this a safe service?

Yes. Our formulary of medications prescribed and conditions treated are controlled, governed, and continuously risk-assessed by our Medical Director, Dr. Aseel Hamoud. Unlike other prescribing services which operate using faceless questionnaires, our service is conducted through remote video consultations, also known as synchronous consultations. This builds patient safety and prescribing appropriateness into our service, ensuring our prescribing clinicians can be satisfied with who and what they are treating. There is no guarantee of supply of medications, and any prescriptions supplied are at the sole discretion of our clinician prescriber. There is no charge for the consultation.

What is a prescribing clinician and is it safe for me to use them on the NowPatient platform?

Our prescribing clinicians are board-certified pharmacists, nurses, or doctors who can also prescribe any medicine for any medical condition, subject to accepted accreditation and good clinical practice. They are all registered with their respective regulatory bodies. For example, a pharmacist independent prescriber is registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Each prescribing clinician undergoes an extensive background check including a disclosure and barring service check (DBS). In addition, they undergo a rigorous license verification process. When you book an appointment with our prescribing clinicians you will see their full name, license number, and any specialized credentials they have.

Is the service available worldwide?

Yes, the Weight Loss Programs service is available worldwide.

Do I need to pay for this service?

Yes. This is a private service. You do not need to pay for the consultation. You only pay for the cost of the medication you are prescribed.

How do I book a consultation?

Once you have logged into your account, navigate to the Weight Loss Programs service card which is located on the dashboard.

There are two ways to find out if you are eligible for treatment under the Weight Loss Program. If you have completed your full health profile, we can automatically check your eligibility for treatment. If you qualify, you will see a recommendation notice on the Weight Loss Programs service card. You can click this notice to proceed to the next step.

If we do not have your full health profile, you can use the ‘Check Eligibility’ action on the Weight Loss Programs widget. This will prompt you to complete a short quiz, which will determine if you qualify.

If you qualify for treatment, you will be shown a ‘Book Consultation’ button which you can select. This will take you to a consultation booking screen. Follow the simple steps to complete your booking. During the booking confirmation process, you will be able to select a date and time that is convenient for you, along with the preferred language and gender of the prescribing clinician you wish to treat you. You will then see a list of all available expert clinicians that meet your selection criteria. After you have selected your clinician and confirm your booking, you will see a summary of the appointment including preliminary information about the consultation. At this point, you can also add a reminder to your calendar. Always ensure your account health profile is up to date before any consultation. This ensures that our clinicians have the most up-to-date information about your current health status and anything that may influence their prescribing decisions. You will receive a push notification, SMS notification and email reminding you of your consultation, 30 minutes before the virtual consultation is due to start.

What happens during the remote video consultation?

During the consultation, the clinician will ask you a series of questions that will allow the clinician to assess your best Weight Loss treatment options. At the end of the consultation, the clinician will decide if a Weight Loss treatment is a safe and appropriate option for you. If it is, the clinician will discuss the various treatment options that may be available, so that you can jointly agree on the option that is most suited to you. Once you have jointly agreed on a Weight Loss treatment, the clinician will issue a prescription order which will be available in your Cart at the end of the consultation.

Also, with your consent, the clinician may wish to inform your doctor of the treatment that was prescribed. We recommend that you agree to this since your doctor is responsible for your overall care and they should have a record of this consultation and medication prescribed. In addition, our clinician may take the opportunity to advise you on your overall health including advice on healthy living or stop smoking.

What happens at the end of the consultation?

At the end of the consultation, you will receive a notification which will summarise the outcome. It will also advise you if any referrals were made to your doctor, along with any other advice that was given to you by the clinician.

If a referral letter was issued to your doctor, you will be able to view a copy of this in the ‘Documents’ section of the dashboard. If you were prescribed a Weight Loss treatment, it will now be available in your Cart.

When you go to your Cart, you will be able to select the treatment, checkout and make payment. Once the checkout is complete, your prescription order will be sent to our regulated online pharmacy for processing.

What if the prescriber does not prescribe what I want?

We operate a safe prescribing service. This means that our prescribing clinicians always exercise their clinical judgment when prescribing. Unfortunately, we do not operate a self select service where you can choose medication and simply buy. If the clinician that sees you does not prescribe anything, then you will not be charged.

Will I get status updates for my order?

Yes. When your treatment is approved, and after you have check out and paid for your order, we will keep you fully updated with the status of your order. Every time the status of your order changes, you will be notified immediately. These notifications will appear in the ‘Notification Feed’ section on the dashboard.

How will my order be delivered?

All orders are shipped in discreet and unmarked packaging. This means it is suitable for delivery wherever you require (home, work, or a neighbour). For thermo-sensitive orders (e.g. Insulin or Weight Loss injections) we use cold chain-validated packaging. Your parcel will normally receive an estimated delivery window from the courier on the day of delivery.

For your protection and safety, your first order can only be delivered to the address that is registered with NowPatient. Future orders can be delivered to any other address, for example, your workplace.

Do you ship cold-chain or temperature sensitive products?

Yes. We use a specialist courier service for all thermo-sensitive deliveries. This is to ensure that cold chain integrity is always maintained and thus the product quality, safety and efficacy.

Learn more about how we handle the delivery of temperature sensitive products.

Where do you deliver?

We currently deliver to all postcodes/zipcodes worldwide. Some postcodes in rural areas may have a slightly longer delivery time.

When will my order arrive?

We aim to ship all orders placed Monday – Friday before 3pm on the same day. Orders placed outside these times will be shipped the next working day. All deliveries are shipped by Royal Mail, which delivers Monday through Saturday in the UK. For deliveries outside of the UK, please check with your national postal service for accurate delivery days.
Our delivery options have the following delivery times:
  • UK – Royal Mail Tracked 24 & Signed for Delivery – Next day delivery
  • Europe – Royal Mail Tracked – Typical delivery of 3-5 working days
  • Worldwide – Royal Mail – Typical delivery of 5-7 working days. If a tracked option is available for your country via Royal Mail, this service will be applied.

What should I do if my order has not arrived?

Delivery is normally made promptly after your dispatch notification is received. You can check the tracking details of your order in the ‘My Notifications’ section of your dashboard, at any point after dispatch.

Unfortunately, packages can sometimes get lost in the delivery system, if after 10 days you have not received your delivery, please contact us and we will do all we can to resolve the problem.

What support will I get as part of the Weight Loss Program?

We are here to help you every step of the way through your Weight Loss journey. We do this by providing you with advice and support covering exercise and diet, as well as discussing any concerns you have about your prescribed treatment. In fact, Weight Loss treatments like injections, require exercise and dietary advice to help reach your Weight Loss goals. Each instalment treatment requires a new consultation, this allows us the opportunity to discuss your progress when renewing your prescription.

You can even use the Weight Loss Graph widget that allows you to track your weight so you can visualise the rate of progress.

What’s included with my order?

If you are ordering weight loss tablets, your order will contain your prescription of weight loss tablets only.

If you are ordering weight loss injections, your order will contain:

  • Your prescription of pre-filled weight loss injection pens
  • Needles
  • Sharps bin for safe disposal of needles (if ordered as part of the bundle)

When should I place my next order?

For Weight Loss medication that is injectable such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, we recommend reordering after you have completed your first 2 doses. This allows you enough time to see how you are getting on with the current dose and ensures it’s appropriate to move you onto the next dose.

At this time we will send you a notification reminder with instructions on how to reorder your next dose. Each month you should increase your dose until reaching the maximum maintenance dose.

How do I reorder for my next dose?

When you are eligible to reorder your next dose or maintenance dose weight loss medication, we will send you a notification reminder. This notification reminder will request that you complete a treatment feedback survey and provide an image of your weight reading.

After you have completed the survey and submitted a photo of your weight readings, one of our weight management clinicians will review your responses and weight progress. If it is in their clinical judgment that they need to discuss the treatment plan with you, then you will be sent a virtual consultation invite.

You should book a suitable time and date for the consultation.

At the end of the consultation, the clinician may advise you to either

  • Stop the treatment
  • Stay on the current dose
  • Increase the dose

If our weight management clinicians approve the survey responses, then they will authorise a new prescription and you will be notified. The medication will be added to your cart, from where you can checkout.

Delivery will be made in line with our delivery timescales.

As a responsible prescribing service, we will always ensure that we monitor your weight loss rate to ensure you’re losing weight safely.

How long will my treatment last?

For Weight Loss medication that is injectable such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, each pen contains 4 doses. You should take one dose a week and therefore each pen will last 4 weeks.

Each month you should increase your dose until reaching the maximum maintenance dose.

How should I store my medication?

For Weight Loss medication that is injectable such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, the manufacturer advises storing it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze.

For Wegovy, if needed, your current in-use pen can be kept outside of the refrigerator (below 30°C) with the pen cap still on for up to 6 weeks.

For Mounjaro, if needed, your current in-use pen can be kept outside of the refrigerator (below 30°C) with the pen cap still on for up to 30 days.

What happens if my order is delivered late?

In the rare case that your order is delivered late please refrigerate your order and contact our Support Team as soon as possible.

It is likely your pen may still be suitable to use and our Support Team can advise you further on this.

Why do I need to complete a treatment feedback survey and send photos of my weight readings, before I can reorder?

We need photos of your most recent weight readings and a completed treatment feedback survey as evidence of your weight loss journey and to make sure your treatment is safe and suitable for you.

It is essential that all images you provide are accurate and unedited. Medications used for weight loss have the potential to cause serious illness and severe side effects if used inappropriately, and our doctors will not be able to assess your health risks if false or inaccurate information is provided.

Weight loss medication is safe for use, but only when you meet the right requirements.

Protecting your privacy

We understand that uploading photos can be a very personal experience, and your privacy is always important to us. We follow a strict security & confidentiality process for any personal images shared with us, and they will only be viewed by your prescribing clinician.

What if I don't want to submit photos or complete the treatment feedback survey?

We can not provide treatment if you can not submit photos or provide treatment feedback using the survey form. We do this to ensure treatment is safe and suitable for you. Using weight loss medication incorrectly can have dangerous side effects, and we want to guarantee we are prescribing safely and appropriately for our patients.

Will I need to upload photos again?

You will need to upload photos & complete the treatment feedback survey:

  • Every month, when requesting a new supply.
  • On your annual review

How do I dispose of my sharps bin?

You can dispose of your sharps bin for free by contacting your local council and arranging a pickup.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take your Mounjaro or Wegovy injection:

If it’s been 4 days or less: Take the injection as soon as you remember. Then, take your next dose on your regular schedule.

If it’s been more than 4 days and less than a full week: Skip the missed dose. Just wait and take your next dose on your regular day.

Otherwise, if it’s been more than a full week: you may need to restart treatment at the lowest dose. See the doctor’s advice available in your patient account specific to your treatment.

This way, you stay on track with your treatment plan.

Can I order more in advance?

Yes, you can order more of your weight loss injections in advance. This can help ensure you have a continuous supply without interruptions in your treatment. This is at the discretion of the prescribing clinician.

What should I do, if I mistakenly took an extra dose?

If you mistakenly took an extra dose, you may experience more intense side effects, but these will settle over time. If the side effects are troublesome, delay your next dose by a few days. However, if the side effects are severe or not resolving, speak to a healthcare professional. It’s essential to read the user manual and instruction leaflet carefully and only inject the dose instructed.

What if I have lost or misused a dose?

If you lose or misuse a dose of your Mounjaro or Wegovy injection, you have two options:

Option 1: Ideally, you should use each dose for at least 4 weeks before moving to the next one. We recommend getting the same dose again and continuing with another pen for another 4 weeks. There’s no harm in staying on a lower dose longer than 4 weeks. Many people do this to allow any side effects to settle.

Option 2: If you don’t want to stay on the same dose and have not had any side effects, you can consider moving up to the next dose after your 3 doses are finished. However, this is not the recommended use of the pen and may cause more side effects at the higher dose.

If you lose or misuse more than one dose, you should order another pen of the same dose to continue for at least 4 weeks in total. We do not recommend moving up to the next dose if you’ve had fewer than 3 doses at your current level.

How long does it take for the medication to work?

It depends on the person. Some people see results within a few weeks, while others might need a few months.

You might start feeling fuller after a few doses, but it can take time for the medication to fully work in your body. If you don’t see any changes after a few months, you can talk to your doctor about other options.

Why aren't I losing more weight?

You may notice that you suddenly stop losing weight after a period of weight loss. This is called a weight loss plateau, and it’s a natural part of the process.

When you increase your dose, you also might notice that it doesn’t work as well as before. This is normal, as your body gets used to the new dose. At first, you might also lose water weight instead of fat, which is why your weight may stabilise.

If you keep taking your medication as directed, eat healthy and exercise regularly, you should continue losing weight after your plateau.

What are alternative treatments for weight loss? Would something else work better?

For weight loss injections, options include Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Saxenda. Wegovy contains semaglutide, mimicking GLP-1 to signal fullness. Mounjaro contains Tirzepatide, mimicking hunger and satiety hormones. Saxenda, containing liraglutide, also signals fullness and aids weight loss with diet and exercise.

For weight loss tablets, Orlistat/Xenical blocks fat absorption, while Mysimba acts on brain areas controlling appetite and food cravings. Alli, an over-the-counter tablet, contains a lower dose of Orlistat.

About Telehealth

Everything you need to know about video consultations

Watch the video below for a rundown of how NowPatient’s remote video consultations work:

Are remote video consultations right for me?

Remote video consultations or synchronous consultations are suitable for many patients who do not need a physical examination and who can communicate via video. Remote video consultations might not always be suitable – for example, if you need a test or physical examination. If that is the case, you will need to attend your doctor’s practice.

Although our Clinicians are clinically trained in various services that we provide, they are not a substitute for your doctor if you have a serious illness or life-threatening condition. If at any time during your remote video consultation, you feel that you would like to end that consultation, then you can say so and the consultation will be ended.

How do I know if the remote video consultation service is safe?

NowPatient has specific safeguards and protocols in place that ensures the service we provide you is safe, secure and effective. Our video technology platform is certified to the highest industry standards of data security and clinical governance.

Do I need to verify my identity during the remote video consultation?

Yes, for your safety and to ensure that the service we provide you, complies with regulations, our clinicians will request that you hold up your ID at the start of your virtual consultation to verify your identity.

Can I have a chaperone (carer, friend, family member) join a remote video consultation?

Yes. If they are in the same location as you, it is possible to have someone with you during your video consultation. You should let your clinician know if you have someone with you at the start of your appointment. You may be asked what relationship the chaperone has to you.

How can I be sure that you are handling and protecting my data securely?

We not only meet the UK and US standards for data security but we exceed them. We demonstrate this by regularly auditing our systems, both internally and externally.

Our various externally audited accreditations such as ISO27001, DTAC, DSPT, and Cyber Essentials + demonstrate our compliance with global security standards and should give you peace of mind.

How is my data stored?

NowPatient’s commitment to data residency is a key priority, and to that end, we only house data in validated data centers. We pledge that UK-based data remains solely in the UK, while US data is governed by HIPAA-prescribed data security protocols.

The data centers we use align with the highest standards of security and privacy, which is demonstrated by a programme of regular external audits to demonstrate the efficacy of safeguards against contemporary threats.

Are my consultations confidential?

Yes, we follow strict General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) which came into force in May 2018. This places legal requirements on ourselves to ensure your personal data is managed securely with the utmost confidentiality. Records are maintained of the processing that is carried out and reported when breaches of the regulation do occur. Our platform is also HIPAA compliant which means we are able to handle PHI (Personal Health Information) securely.

Can I select which clinician I have my consultation with?

Yes. NowPatient allows you to choose from a pool of clinicians based on competencies, gender and languages spoken.

Will my doctor be informed of any consultations I have through the app?

We recognize that your doctor is responsible for your overall care. Our clinicians will communicate with your doctor if they have concerns or recommendations that could be beneficial for your overall care. Referrals are only made upon your explicit consent or if they form part of the terms of service that you consent to.

Do remote video consultations save money for health systems?

The traditional healthcare model encourages patients with health concerns to visit their doctor or pharmacy to seek a consultation. NowPatient is the first remote video consultation service that connects patients to a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians.

It allows patients to book a consultation with a clinician from anywhere in the United Kingdom and the United States. Consultations can be conducted using a smartphone, tablet or PC.

Are remote video consultations safer than online questionnaires?

NowPatient only provides its services in real time over a live video feed. This is called synchronous telehealth. We believe it is the safest way for you to receive remote care because it is in real-time. It is especially beneficial in an emergency situation as the clinician and patient can visually see each other. The clinician can ask all the questions they need to make a diagnosis or build a treatment plan during the consultation. Equally, any concerns you have can be addressed at the point of consultation.

Some providers use a low-tech approach for conducting clinical services such as a questionnaire or quiz. Although it may be suitable for low-risk clinical services, it often means you will not have any face-to-face interaction nor be able to raise concerns about treatment or diagnosis, in real-time, with the clinician who is providing your care.

What quality of care can I expect to receive from a remote video consultation?

Your remote video consultation, conducted by a NowPatient clinician, will always seek to provide you with safe, high-quality care. Your health and well-being is our priority. We continuously monitor and assess the services we provide you to ensure that it is safe, effective, caring and well-led.

Why am I being asked to provide my Blood Pressure reading?

For certain treatments and services, our clinicians require you to provide your most up-to-date blood pressure reading. This is to ensure that the service or treatment being considered is both suitable and safe for you.

If I don’t have a Blood Pressure monitor, how can I provide my readings?

The NowPatient app uses a new approach to measuring blood pressure using your smartphone camera held in front of your face. It is the world’s only blood pressure check without a cuff or wearable.

Is the remote blood pressure monitor safe and medically accurate?

Yes. It Is classified as a Medical Device. It conforms to EU CE and UKCA Class I Medical Device standards. There is also an impending CE Class IIa conformity, expected in Q2 2025.

How does the remote blood pressure monitor actually work?

The diagram below outlines how NowPatient’s blood pressure reading works:

How does NowPatient's blood pressure checker work?

When and how is my remote blood pressure reading taken?

At the point of booking any service or treatment, we will let you know whether there are any requirements for an up-to-date blood pressure reading.

If you are required to give a reading, you will be guided through a series of simple steps.

What devices does the remote Blood Pressure monitor work on?

You will need a recent iOS or Android smartphone with a front-facing camera. It is not available for use on desktop devices.

Why do my results keep failing when using the remote blood pressure monitor service?

Possible reasons why results are not being generated include:

  1. Bad lighting – Make sure you are well-lit by diffuse lighting. Avoid strong shadows and uneven lighting.
  2. Unstabilised device – Ensure your device is kept still during the reading.
  3. Not remaining still – You must stay still during the reading and avoid talking.
  4. Poor Wi-Fi – The service requires a strong and stable Wi-Fi signal.
