About Liraglutide

Liraglutide is indicated in adults for weight management, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It is used to help with weight loss in individuals who are obese or overweight and have at least one weight-related condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.

Liraglutide is a prescription-only medication and may be recommended when other weight loss methods have not been effective or are not well tolerated.

NowPatient offers Liraglutide as a treatment for weight management following an online consultation with a prescriber.

  • Liraglutide may interact with medications that lower blood sugar (such as insulin or sulfonylureas), so always consult your prescribing clinician if you are on any other medication
  • It is usually prescribed when lifestyle changes alone are not sufficient
  • You should stop using Liraglutide if your prescriber advises that it is no longer needed

Dosage and strength for Liraglutide for weight management

Liraglutide is available as a pre-filled injection pen containing 6 mg/ml of solution.

  • The starting dose is 0.6 mg once daily
  • The dose is increased by 0.6 mg each week until the recommended daily dose of 3.0 mg is reached
  • It is injected subcutaneously (under the skin) into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, once a day at the same time

Your prescribing clinician will provide full instructions.

What happens if you use too much Liraglutide?

Using more than the prescribed amount of Liraglutide won’t speed up weight loss and can increase the risk of side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and low blood sugar.

If you believe you’ve used too much, contact your doctor or reach out to one of our prescribing clinicians.

What are the side effects of Liraglutide?

Common side effects include :

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea or constipation

  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia). This usually occurs during the first 3 months of treatment
  • Dry mouth

More serious side effects include :

  • Pancreatitis (inflamed pancreas)

  • Allergic reactions

If you experience any serious side effects, you should contact NHS 111.

If you experience a serious allergic reaction, seek emergency help by calling 999. Warning signs include:

Information about using Liraglutide with other medications

Liraglutide may interact with:

  • Insulin or sulfonylureas (risk of low blood sugar)
  • Other GLP-1 receptor agonists (should not be used in combination)

Always let your prescriber know about any other medications, including over-the-counter supplements.

Why might Liraglutide not work for weight loss?

Liraglutide may not work for everyone. Reasons include:

  • Not reaching the full dose (3.0 mg daily)
  • Not combining the treatment with diet and exercise
  • Individual variation in response
  • Drug interactions

If, after 12 weeks at the full dose, you haven’t lost at least 5% of your body weight, your clinician may advise stopping the treatment.

Can Liraglutide be used long term?

Liraglutide can be used long term if it continues to be effective and well-tolerated. However, long-term use should always be monitored by a healthcare professional.

For weight management, treatment is usually continued as long as you are losing weight or maintaining your weight loss. Your clinician may recommend stopping Liraglutide if you have not lost a meaningful amount of weight (usually at least 5% of your starting weight) after 12 weeks at the full dose.

How to store Liraglutide

  • Store in the refrigerator (2°C–8°C) before first use
  • After first use, it can be kept at room temperature (up to 30°C) for up to 30 days
  • Do not freeze
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Dispose of unused pens properly—ask your pharmacist how to do this safely

Is there a herbal Liraglutide?

No. Herbal Liraglutide does not exist. Any product claiming to be a herbal version may be counterfeit and unsafe.

Should I avoid any particular food or drink when using Liraglutide?

You can eat and drink normally while using Liraglutide. However, avoid high-fat meals that may worsen nausea. There are no specific food or drink restrictions, but a healthy, calorie-controlled diet is essential for the treatment to be effective.

What lifestyle changes can I make to help with weight management?

  • Eat a balanced, reduced-calorie diet
  • Exercise regularly (aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week)
  • Drink water instead of sugary drinks
  • Track your food intake and weight
  • Get adequate sleep and manage stress
  • Avoid alcohol or limit intake to reduce calorie consumption

FAQs

Answers to Popular Questions About Liraglutide

What is Liraglutide?

Liraglutide is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist administered as a once-daily subcutaneous injection. It is manufactured by Novo Nordisk and is available under two brand names: Victoza (1.2 mg and 1.8 mg for type 2 diabetes) and Saxenda (3 mg for weight management). Liraglutide shares 97% structural homology with human GLP-1 and has a half-life of approximately 13 hours, allowing once-daily dosing. It was the first GLP-1 agonist to be licensed for weight management in the UK.

What is Liraglutide used for?

Liraglutide is licensed for two indications in the UK. As Victoza (1.2/1.8 mg): treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in combination with other glucose-lowering therapies when these, together with diet and exercise, do not provide adequate glycaemic control. As Saxenda (3 mg): chronic weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with weight-related comorbidities. The dose determines the indication — the diabetes dose is lower than the weight management dose.

How does Liraglutide work?

Liraglutide mimics the incretin hormone GLP-1, activating GLP-1 receptors in the pancreas, brain, and gut. In the pancreas, it stimulates glucose-dependent insulin secretion and suppresses glucagon release. In the brain, it acts on hypothalamic appetite centres to reduce hunger and increase satiety. In the gut, it slows gastric emptying, prolonging the feeling of fullness. These combined effects lower blood glucose levels and reduce caloric intake, contributing to both glycaemic control and weight loss.

How do I inject Liraglutide?

Inject liraglutide subcutaneously once daily at any time, with or without food. Use the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm as injection sites, rotating within and between areas. Try to inject at roughly the same time each day for consistency. Attach a new needle for each injection, dial the prescribed dose, insert the needle, and hold the injection button for 6 seconds. Safely dispose of needles in a sharps bin.

What is the dose escalation?

For diabetes (Victoza): start at 0.6 mg daily for at least one week, then increase to 1.2 mg daily; the dose may be increased to 1.8 mg if needed. For weight management (Saxenda): start at 0.6 mg daily, increasing by 0.6 mg weekly over 4 weeks to the maintenance dose of 3 mg daily. If you cannot tolerate a dose increase, remain at the current dose for an additional week before retrying.

What are the side effects of Liraglutide?

Very common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, and vomiting — these are most prominent during dose escalation and usually improve. Common side effects include constipation, headache, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, fatigue, dizziness, injection site reactions, and gallbladder disorders (gallstones). Hypoglycaemia may occur when used with sulphonylureas or insulin for diabetes. Pancreatitis is a rare but serious risk — seek immediate medical attention for severe, persistent abdominal pain.

How is Liraglutide different from Semaglutide?

Both are GLP-1 receptor agonists but differ in key ways. Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) is injected weekly; liraglutide (Victoza/Saxenda) is injected daily. Semaglutide produces greater weight loss (12–15%) than liraglutide (5–8%) and greater HbA1c reduction. Semaglutide is also available orally (Rybelsus). Liraglutide has been available longer with more extensive long-term safety data. The choice depends on efficacy goals, dosing preference, and availability.

How can I get Liraglutide?

Liraglutide requires a prescription. For diabetes (Victoza): available on the NHS through your GP or diabetes specialist. For weight management (Saxenda): available through specialist weight management services or privately via online services like NowPatient. Your prescriber will assess your suitability based on your condition, BMI, and medical history.
