About Cilique
Cilique is a combined hormonal contraceptive used to provide protection against pregnancy. It contains norgestimate, a progesterone and ethinylestradiol, an oestrogen as its active ingredients.
Cilique works by stopping the release of an egg each month from the ovaries, preventing ovulation during the menstrual cycle. It also makes cervical mucus thicker, making it more difficult for sperm to pass through the cervix, and makes the lining of the womb thinner, so fertilised eggs are less likely to implant in the uterus wall.
NowPatient offers the Cilique birth control pills for the prevention of pregnancy only, following an online consultation with a prescribing clinician.

FAQs
Answers to Popular Questions About Cilique
What is Cilique?
Cilique is a monophasic combined oral contraceptive pill containing norgestimate 250 micrograms and ethinylestradiol 35 micrograms. Norgestimate is a second-generation progestogen with low androgenic activity, making Cilique a good choice for women who experience acne or androgenic side effects with other pills. It is taken for 21 days followed by a 7-day pill-free interval. Cilique is a generic equivalent of Cilest (now discontinued in the UK).
How does Cilique work?
Cilique prevents pregnancy through three mechanisms: suppression of ovulation by inhibiting gonadotrophin release, thickening of cervical mucus to prevent sperm passage, and alteration of the endometrium. Norgestimate is converted to norelgestromin (the same active metabolite found in the Evra patch) and has favourable anti-androgenic properties. When taken correctly, Cilique is over 99% effective.
Is Cilique good for acne?
Yes, Cilique is often prescribed for women who experience acne, as norgestimate has anti-androgenic properties. It can help reduce sebum production and improve acne. While not specifically licensed for acne treatment in the UK (unlike Dianette), it is commonly used off-label for this purpose and is recommended in NICE and BAD acne guidelines as a suitable combined pill for women with acne who also require contraception.
How do I take Cilique?
Take one tablet daily at the same time for 21 days, then take a 7-day pill-free break. A withdrawal bleed usually occurs during the break. Start the next pack on the 8th day. If starting for the first time, begin on day 1 of your period for immediate protection. Cilique can be taken with or without food.
What if I miss a Cilique pill?
Follow the standard FSRH missed pill guidance. If less than 24 hours late, take the missed pill immediately — no additional contraception needed. If more than 24 hours late, take the most recently missed pill, use condoms for 7 days, and if fewer than 7 active pills remain, skip the pill-free break and start a new pack immediately.
What are the side effects of Cilique?
Common side effects include headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, mood changes, and breakthrough bleeding. Due to norgestimate’s low androgenic profile, Cilique is less likely to cause acne, weight gain, or excess hair growth compared to some other pills. The VTE risk with norgestimate is similar to that of levonorgestrel-containing pills (lower risk category). Most side effects settle within 3 months.
How can I get Cilique?
Cilique is available on NHS prescription from your GP, sexual health clinic, or through online services like NowPatient. It may be specifically recommended if you have acne or have experienced androgenic side effects with other pills. NowPatient offers online consultations and home delivery.
