About Microgynon 30
Microgynon 30 is a combined hormonal contraceptive used to provide protection against pregnancy. It contains levonorgestrel, a progesterone and ethinylestradiol, an oestrogen as its active ingredients.
Microgynon 30 works by stopping the release of an egg each month from the ovaries, preventing ovulation during the menstrual cycle. It also makes cervical mucus thicker, making it more difficult for sperm to pass through the cervix, and makes the lining of the womb thinner, so fertilised eggs are less likely to implant in the uterus wall.
NowPatient offers the Microgynon 30 birth control pills for the prevention of pregnancy only, following an online consultation with a prescribing clinician.

FAQs
Answers to Popular Questions About Microgynon 30
What is Microgynon 30?
Microgynon 30 is one of the most commonly prescribed combined oral contraceptive pills in the UK. It contains levonorgestrel 150 micrograms and ethinylestradiol 30 micrograms. It is manufactured by Bayer and has been used for decades with extensive safety data. Microgynon 30 is a prescription-only medicine taken daily for 21 days followed by a 7-day pill-free break. Levonorgestrel is a second-generation progestogen associated with the lowest risk of venous thromboembolism among combined pills.
How does Microgynon 30 work?
Microgynon 30 works by suppressing ovulation through the combined hormonal action of levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol. It also thickens cervical mucus, preventing sperm from reaching the egg, and thins the endometrial lining to reduce the chance of implantation. When taken correctly, Microgynon 30 is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
Why is Microgynon 30 so commonly prescribed?
Microgynon 30 is a first-choice combined pill in UK practice because levonorgestrel-containing pills have the lowest risk of VTE among combined oral contraceptives. It has decades of safety data, is well-tolerated, inexpensive, and available as a generic. FSRH guidelines recommend starting with a pill containing levonorgestrel or norethisterone (lowest VTE risk) unless there are specific reasons for choosing an alternative progestogen.
How do I take Microgynon 30?
Take one tablet daily for 21 consecutive days, at approximately the same time each day. Then have a 7-day pill-free break. A withdrawal bleed usually occurs during this break. Start the next 21-day pack after the 7-day break, whether or not bleeding has finished. If starting for the first time on day 1 of your period, you have immediate protection. If starting at any other time, use additional contraception (condoms) for 7 days.
What should I do if I miss a Microgynon 30 pill?
Follow the standard FSRH missed pill guidance: 1 pill missed (less than 48 hours late): take it as soon as remembered, continue as normal, no extra precautions needed. 2 or more pills missed (more than 48 hours late): take the last missed pill, leave earlier missed pills, use condoms for 7 days. If pills were missed in week 1 and unprotected sex occurred, consider emergency contraception. If missed in week 3, start the next pack immediately without a break.
What are the side effects of Microgynon 30?
Common side effects include headache, nausea, breast tenderness, mood changes, breakthrough bleeding (especially in the first 3 months), and changes in libido. Some women report weight gain, bloating, or skin changes. Serious but rare risks include VTE (approximately 5–7 per 10,000 women per year, compared to 2 per 10,000 in non-users), arterial thrombosis, and, rarely, liver tumours. The risk is lowest with levonorgestrel-containing pills like Microgynon.
Does Microgynon 30 cause weight gain?
Some women report weight changes when starting Microgynon 30, but large clinical studies have not shown a significant average weight gain attributable to combined oral contraceptives. Any changes are typically small. Water retention may account for slight weight fluctuations. If weight gain is a concern, lifestyle factors are generally more influential than the pill.
Who should not take Microgynon 30?
Microgynon 30 is contraindicated in women with a history of VTE, stroke, or heart attack; uncontrolled hypertension; migraine with aura; smokers aged over 35; breast cancer; severe liver disease; and certain inherited clotting disorders. Your prescriber will assess you using UKMEC criteria. Women with a BMI over 35, diabetes with complications, or certain cardiac conditions should also discuss alternatives.
How can I get Microgynon 30?
Microgynon 30 is available on NHS prescription from your GP, contraception clinic, or through online services like NowPatient. Blood pressure and BMI checks are recommended. NowPatient offers convenient online contraceptive consultations with home delivery.
