About Marvelon
Marvelon is a combined hormonal contraceptive used to provide protection against pregnancy. It contains desogestrel, a progesterone and ethinylestradiol, an oestrogen as its active ingredients.
Marvelon works by stopping the release of an egg each month from the ovaries, preventing ovulation during the menstrual cycle. It also makes cervical mucus thicker, making it more difficult for sperm to pass through the cervix, and makes the lining of the womb thinner, so fertilised eggs are less likely to implant in the uterus wall.
NowPatient offers the Marvelon birth control pills for the prevention of pregnancy only, following an online consultation with a prescribing clinician.

FAQs
Answers to Popular Questions About Marvelon
What is Marvelon?
Marvelon is a combined oral contraceptive pill containing desogestrel 150 micrograms and ethinylestradiol 30 micrograms. It is manufactured by Organon and is one of the most well-established combined pills in the UK. Marvelon is taken for 21 days followed by a 7-day pill-free break. Desogestrel is a third-generation progestogen with minimal androgenic effects, which can be beneficial for women with acne or oily skin. Gedarel 30/150 is the generic equivalent of Marvelon.
How does Marvelon work?
Marvelon works by suppressing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the endometrial lining. The combination of desogestrel and ethinylestradiol provides highly effective contraception when taken correctly. Desogestrel has low androgenic activity, meaning it is less likely to cause acne or oily skin compared to levonorgestrel-containing pills.
Is Marvelon good for acne?
Marvelon can be helpful for acne because desogestrel has low androgenic activity and the ethinylestradiol component increases sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), reducing free testosterone levels. Many women find their skin improves on Marvelon. While not specifically licensed for acne (unlike Dianette), it is commonly chosen for women who want contraception and have mild to moderate acne.
How do I take Marvelon?
Take one tablet daily at the same time for 21 days, then have a 7-day pill-free break. Start the next pack after the 7-day break. If starting on day 1 of your period, protection is immediate. Take tablets in the order marked on the blister pack. Swallow whole with water.
What if I miss a Marvelon pill?
Follow the FSRH missed pill guidance. One pill missed: take it as soon as you remember, continue as normal. Two or more missed: take the last missed pill, use condoms for 7 days, and follow week-specific guidance. In week 1, consider emergency contraception if unprotected sex occurred. In week 3, skip the pill-free break and start the next pack immediately.
What are the side effects of Marvelon?
Common side effects include headache, nausea, breast tenderness, mood changes, breakthrough bleeding, and weight changes. Desogestrel-containing pills carry a slightly higher VTE risk than levonorgestrel-containing pills (approximately 9–12 vs 5–7 per 10,000 women per year). Most side effects are mild and settle within 2–3 months. If side effects persist, your prescriber may suggest switching to an alternative pill.
How can I get Marvelon?
Marvelon is available on NHS prescription or privately from your GP, contraception clinic, or through NowPatient’s online service. Gedarel 30/150 is a generic alternative. NowPatient offers online consultations and home delivery.
