About Logynon ED
Logynon ED is a combined hormonal contraceptive used to provide protection against pregnancy. It contains levonorgestrel, a progesterone and ethinylestradiol, an oestrogen as its active ingredients.
Logynon ED works by stopping the release of an egg each month from the ovaries, preventing ovulation during the menstrual cycle. It also makes cervical mucus thicker, making it more difficult for sperm to pass through the cervix, and makes the lining of the womb thinner, so fertilised eggs are less likely to implant in the uterus wall.
NowPatient offers the Logynon ED birth control pills for the prevention of pregnancy only, following an online consultation with a prescribing clinician.

Answers to Popular Questions About Logynon ED
What is Logynon ED?
Logynon ED is a triphasic combined oral contraceptive pill containing levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol. The ‘ED’ stands for ‘every day’ — the pack contains 21 active hormone tablets and 7 inactive (placebo) tablets, meaning you take a pill every day without a break. The triphasic design means the hormone doses change across three phases during the cycle, more closely mimicking the body’s natural hormone fluctuations. Logynon ED is manufactured by Bayer.
How does Logynon ED differ from Logynon?
Logynon and Logynon ED contain exactly the same active hormones in the same triphasic pattern. The only difference is that Logynon ED includes 7 extra placebo (dummy) tablets, so you take a pill every day without a break. This eliminates the need to remember when to restart after a pill-free week, making it easier for women who prefer a continuous daily routine. The contraceptive effectiveness is identical.
How effective is Logynon ED?
When taken correctly, Logynon ED is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. With typical use (accounting for occasional missed pills), effectiveness is approximately 91%. The triphasic design does not affect overall efficacy compared to monophasic pills. It is important to take the tablets in the correct order, as each phase contains different hormone doses.
How do I take Logynon ED?
Take one tablet daily at the same time every day, following the arrows on the blister pack. The pack contains 6 light brown tablets (phase 1), 5 white tablets (phase 2), 10 ochre/yellow tablets (phase 3), and 7 large white inactive tablets. Take all 28 tablets in order without any break, then start a new pack immediately. A withdrawal bleed usually occurs during the 7 inactive tablet days. It is essential to take the tablets in the correct sequence.
What if I miss a Logynon ED pill?
If you miss an active (hormone) tablet: follow the same missed pill rules as standard combined pills — take the missed pill as soon as you remember and use additional contraception for 7 days if more than 24 hours late. If you miss an inactive (placebo) tablet: simply discard the missed placebo and continue taking the next tablet as scheduled. Missing a placebo tablet does not affect contraceptive protection.
What are the side effects of Logynon ED?
Common side effects are the same as other combined pills containing levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol: headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, mood changes, and breakthrough bleeding. These typically settle within the first 3 months. Levonorgestrel is associated with the lowest VTE risk among combined pill progestogens (approximately 5–7 per 10,000 women per year).
Can I skip my period on Logynon ED?
Skipping the withdrawal bleed is more complex with triphasic pills like Logynon ED than with monophasic pills, because the hormone doses vary across the pack. If you wish to avoid periods, your prescriber may recommend switching to a monophasic pill (such as Microgynon 30 or Rigevidon), which can be run together continuously more straightforwardly.
