FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Nicotinell Fruit 4mg Medicated Chewing Gum for Quitting Smoking
What is Nicotinell Gum and how does it help you quit smoking?
Nicotinell Medicated Chewing Gum is a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) that releases nicotine while chewing, absorbed through the mouth lining. Available in 2 mg (for lighter smokers, fewer than 20 cigarettes/day) and 4 mg (heavier smokers, 20+/day) strengths, in Fruit and Mint flavours. Available through the NHS Quit Smoking service.
How do I use Nicotinell Gum?
Use the ‘chew and rest’ technique: chew slowly until you taste the nicotine or feel tingling, then rest the gum between cheek and gum until the taste fades. Repeat for about 30 minutes per piece. Use 8–12 pieces per day, maximum 25 (2 mg) or 15 (4 mg) per day. Avoid eating or drinking (especially acidic drinks) for 15 minutes before use. Use for up to 12 weeks, then gradually reduce.
Can I get Nicotinell Gum through the NHS?
Yes, Nicotinell Medicated Chewing Gum (Fruit 2 mg, Fruit 4 mg, and Mint 4 mg) are available through the NHS Quit Smoking service.
What are the side effects?
Common side effects include jaw ache, hiccups, nausea, mouth and throat irritation, and indigestion. The slow ‘chew and rest’ technique minimises these. Chewing too quickly causes nausea and hiccups.
Can I combine Nicotinell Gum with patches?
Yes, combining gum with nicotine patches is an effective approach recommended by NICE. The patch provides steady background nicotine, and the gum addresses breakthrough cravings. Your pharmacist can set this up through the NHS Quit Smoking service.
