Answers to Popular Questions About How Mometasone Treats Sinusitis
What is Mometasone nasal spray and how is it used for acute sinusitis?
Mometasone furoate is an intranasal corticosteroid available as a nasal spray (branded as Nasonex). It reduces nasal and sinus inflammation, congestion, and swelling during acute sinusitis. Like fluticasone furoate, it is recommended by NICE as a treatment option for acute sinusitis. Through the NHS Pharmacy First service, pharmacists can supply mometasone nasal spray for sinusitis without a GP appointment.
How do I use Mometasone nasal spray for sinusitis?
Adults: 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily (total 400 mcg/day) for acute sinusitis. Once symptoms improve, reduce to 2 sprays in each nostril once daily. Shake well before use, blow nose, direct spray towards the outer wall of each nostril, and breathe in gently. Do not sniff forcefully. Continue for the duration advised by your pharmacist.
Can I get Mometasone through Pharmacy First?
Yes, pharmacists can supply mometasone nasal spray through the free NHS Pharmacy First service for acute sinusitis. The pharmacist will assess your symptoms and determine whether a nasal corticosteroid alone or in combination with antibiotics is most appropriate.
What are the side effects of Mometasone nasal spray?
Common side effects include nosebleeds, nasal irritation, headache, and sneezing after application. Nosebleeds are the most frequently reported side effect — aim the spray away from the nasal septum to reduce risk. Sore throat and oral candidiasis (thrush) are uncommon. Systemic effects are very rare at recommended doses.
How is Mometasone different from Fluticasone Furoate?
Both are potent intranasal corticosteroids with similar efficacy for sinusitis. Mometasone (Nasonex) is often used at twice daily dosing for acute sinusitis, while fluticasone furoate (Avamys) is typically once daily. Both have minimal systemic absorption. The choice is usually based on availability and prescriber preference. They can be used interchangeably.
