FAQs
Answers to Popular Questions About How Erythromycin Treats Impetigo
What is Erythromycin and how is it used for acute sinusitis?
Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used as an alternative to penicillin-based antibiotics for acute bacterial sinusitis, typically when the patient has a penicillin allergy. It is available as erythromycin stearate tablets (take on an empty stomach) or erythromycin ethyl succinate tablets/suspension (take with food). Through Pharmacy First, pharmacists can supply erythromycin for sinusitis without a GP visit.
What is the dose of Erythromycin for sinusitis?
Erythromycin stearate: 250–500 mg four times daily for 5 days (empty stomach). Erythromycin ethyl succinate: 400–800 mg four times or twice daily for 5 days (with food). Children: weight-based dosing. Your pharmacist will advise on the correct formulation and dose.
When are antibiotics needed for sinusitis?
Most acute sinusitis is viral and resolves without antibiotics within 2–3 weeks. Antibiotics are recommended only when symptoms persist beyond 10 days, or are severe from the outset (high fever, severe facial pain, purulent discharge). Your Pharmacy First pharmacist will determine whether antibiotics are appropriate.
What are the side effects?
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhoea. Taking the ethyl succinate form with food reduces stomach upset. Seek advice if sinusitis symptoms worsen or do not improve within 2–3 days of antibiotics.
