Edecrin is a diuretic (water pill) and is used to treat Edema (swelling from fluid) related to congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, and kidney problems, and short-term management of ascites (abdominal swelling) due to cancer, idiopathic edema (swelling due to an unknown cause), and lymphedema (swelling caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system).
How does Edecrin work?
Edecrin is a loop diuretic (water pill) which works in the kidney to remove certain electrolytes and extra fluid from your body to lower swelling.
How do I take Edecrin?
Edecrin is typically taken with a starting dose is between 50 mg to 100 mg by mouth daily, sometimes divided into two doses per day. The maximum daily dose is 400 mg.
Is it safe for me to take Edecrin?
Edecrin is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have anuria. If increasing electrolyte imbalance, azotemia, and/or oliguria occur during treatment of severe, progressive renal disease, the diuretic should be discontinued. In a few patients this diuretic has produced severe, watery diarrhea. If this occurs, it should be discontinued and not used again.
Edecrin Common Side Effects
Common side effects of Edecrin include:
- Dizziness
- Feeling tired or weak
- Loss of appetite
Edecrin Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Edecrin. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Allergic reactions: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Electrolyte imbalance: weakness, muscle pain or cramps, dizziness, fast heartbeat, or vomiting
Severely low blood pressure: dizziness, lightheadedness, confusion, blurry vision, fainting - Diarrhea (severe watery diarrhea or loose stools that don’t get better)
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Edecrin
The following medications may interact with Edecrin:
- Lithium – May reduce lithium’s renal clearance and add a high risk of lithium toxicity
- Aminoglycoside and some cephalosporin antibiotics – Edecrin may increase the ototoxic potential of. Their concurrent use should be avoided
- Warfarin – May displace warfarin from plasma protein; a reduction in the usual anticoagulant dosage may be required in patients receiving both drugs
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent – May reduce the diuretic, natriuretic, and antihypertensive effects of loop, potassium-sparing and thiazide diuretics
