MEDICAL INFORMATION

Trifarotene Key Facts

What dosages is Trifarotene available in?

Trifarotene is available as a 0.005% cream application.

What is Trifarotene used for?

Trifarotene is a prescription topical retinoid cream approved for the treatment of acne vulgaris in individuals aged 9 years and older. It is particularly effective for both facial and truncal acne, including areas such as the chest, shoulders, and back.

How does Trifarotene work?

Trifarotene is a retinoid; specifically, a fourth-generation elective retinoic acid receptor (RAR)-γ agonist that helps accelerate the skin’s natural cell turnover, exfoliating dead cells and helping to prevent new acne breakouts. It may also reduce the inflammation commonly associated with pimples.

How do I take Trifarotene?

Trifarotene is a prescription topical retinoid used to treat acne vulgaris on the face, chest, shoulders, and back. To use it effectively and safely, follow these steps:

Step 1: Cleanse

  • Wash the affected areas with a mild or soap-free cleanser.
  • Gently pat the skin dry.

Step 2: Apply Trifarotene

  • Apply once daily in the evening.
  • Use a thin layer:
    • Face: 1 pump (covers forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin).
    • Upper trunk (shoulders, chest, upper back): 2 pumps.
    • Middle/lower back: 1 additional pump if needed.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, lips, mouth, corners of the nose, and mucous membranes.
  • Wash your hands after application.

Step 3: Moisturize

  • Apply a moisturizer as needed to minimize dryness and irritation.
  • You can apply it before or after Trifarotene; ensure the skin is dry between applications.

Step 4: Protect from Sunlight

  • Minimize sun exposure.
  • Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and wear protective clothing over treated areas.

Additional Tips

  • Do not apply to cuts, abrasions, sunburned skin, or areas affected by eczema.
  • Avoid using other skin products that may cause irritation, such as medicated or abrasive soaps and cleansers, products with high alcohol content, or other acne treatments unless directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Avoid waxing on treated areas.
  • If you miss a dose, apply it the next evening. Do not double up on doses.

Is it safe for me to take Trifarotene?

Trifarotene is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA-licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you.

Trifarotene Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects are rare with Trifarotene. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.

  • Severe Skin Irritation: This can manifest as intense redness, burning, stinging, scaling, or swelling at the application site. These reactions are more common during the initial weeks of treatment and may decrease over time.
  • Increased Sensitivity to Sunlight: Trifarotene can heighten your skin’s sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) light, leading to a higher risk of sunburn. It’s advisable to minimize sun exposure and use sunscreen with a high SPF. Medical News Today
  • Allergic Reactions: Though rare, some individuals may experience allergic reactions, including skin rash, itching, hives, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Trifarotene

Salicylic Acid Products: Concurrent use with salicylic acid can enhance skin irritation.

Isotretinoin (Oral Retinoid): Using Trifarotene with isotretinoin may increase the risk of skin irritation.

Photosensitizing Agents: Medications like aminolevulinic acid, methoxsalen, porfimer, and verteporfin can increase sensitivity to sunlight when used with Trifarotene.

Astringents and Abrasive Products: Products such as medicated or abrasive soaps, cleansers, and cosmetics with strong skin-drying effects can exacerbate skin irritation when used with Trifarotene.

  • NowPatient is worth your time!

I do not leave reviews, due to time and a rare condition I have. I initially left a message, my call was returned within 2 hours or less. NowPatient offers 4 discount programs. I worked with Jay, he was genuine and wanted to help me all while giving me amazing customer service. Even though I didn't qualify, he gave me some suggestions and tips while encouraging me to follow up with the manufacturer along with other things I could do. This is the real deal, not a scam, and not a waste of your time. Amazing!! Thank you, Jay!

  • Excellent service

Cannot speak highly enough of the service and assistance I have received from NowPatient. I was dealing with a very kind and helpful clinician who couldn't do enough to assist. He was knowledgeable about the medication being prescribed and the consultation was thorough. There were some hurdles to overcome to receive the medication overseas and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommend.
