How does Premarin Tablets work?
Premarin Tablets contains a type of estrogen, a natural hormone in your body. This medication replaces the estrogen that your body loses during menopause. Replacing estrogen strengthens bones and relieves symptoms of menopause, like vaginal dryness and irritation, hot flashes, and night sweats. The tablets can also help with the pain that happens with some forms of advanced breast and prostate cancer.
How do I take Premarin Tablets?
Premarin Tablets is dosed as follows:
- Menopausal symptoms: The typical starting dose is 0.3 mg by mouth once a day
- Low estrogen: The starting dose is determined by your provider based on the condition causing low estrogen. The starting dose ranges from 0.3 mg to 1.25 mg by mouth once a day for 3 weeks, with 1 week off (no tablets taken during this week). Then this cycle is repeated
- Breast cancer: The typical dose is 10 mg by mouth 3 times a day for at least 3 months
- Prostate cancer: The typical dose is 1.25 mg to 2.5 mg by mouth 3 times a day
- Prevention of bone loss (osteoporosis): The typical starting dose is 0.3 mg by mouth once a day
Is it safe for me to take Premarin Tablets?
Premarin Tablets is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if the following apply:
- Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
- Known, suspected, or history of breast cancer except in appropriately selected patients being treated for metastatic diseases
- Known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia.
- Active DVT, PE, or a history of these conditions
- Active arterial thromboembolic disease (for example, stroke and MI), or a history of these conditions.
- Known anaphylactic reaction or angioedema with PREMARIN
- Known liver impairment or disease
- Known protein C, protein S, or antithrombin deficiency, or other known thrombophilic disorders
- Known or suspected pregnancy

Common side effects of Premarin Tablets:
- Headache
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Breast pain

- Passing gas
Premarin Tablets Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Premarin Tablets. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severe allergic reaction: rash, itching, swollen lips or tongue, trouble breathing, stomach pain, vomiting
- Heart attack: chest pain or tightness, shortness or breath, sweating, nausea, pain that radiates up to your shoulder, arm, neck, or jaw
- Stroke: sudden trouble talking or walking, numbness on one side of your body or face, severe headache, dizziness, confusion
- Blood clot: chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fast heart rate, swelling, pain, or redness in the arms or legs
- Cancer: lumps, pain, swelling, or changes in the breasts; swollen lymph nodes, unusual or heavy vaginal bleeding, bloating, extreme tiredness, stomach-area pain

The following medications may interact with Premarin Tablets:
- Inducers and/or inhibitors of CYP3A4 may affect estrogen drug metabolism
