What is pegfilgrastim used for?
pegfilgrastim is a leukocyte growth factor used to:
Decrease the incidence of infection, as manifested by febrile
neutropenia, in patients with non-myeloid malignancies receiving myelosuppressive anti-cancer drugs associated with a clinically significant incidence of febrile neutropenia. Increase survival in patients acutely exposed to myelosuppressive doses
of radiation (Hematopoietic Subsyndrome of Acute Radiation
Syndrome).
How does pegfilgrastim work?
pegfilgrastim is a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). It works like the G-CSF protein that you naturally have in your body. G-CSF stimulates (triggers) your bone marrow to make neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that helps your body fight infections.
How do I take pegfilgrastim?
pegfilgrastim is dosed as follows:
- People receiving bone marrow-suppressing chemotherapy
- Adults and children weighing 99 lbs or more: The typical dose is 6 mg injected under the skin (subcutaneously) once per chemotherapy cycle. Please see the FAQ section for more details
- Children who weigh less than 99 lbs: Dosing will depend on the child’s weight
- People exposed to bone marrow-suppressing radiation (Neulasta only)
- Adults and children weighing 99 lbs or more The typical dose is 6 mg injected under the skin as soon as possible, followed by another 6 mg one week later
- Children who weigh less than 99 lbs: Dosing will depend on the child’s weight
Is it safe for me to take pegfilgrastim?
pegfilgrastim is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have a history of serious allergic reactions to human granulocyte colony-stimulating factors such as pegfilgrastim or filgrastim.

pegfilgrastim Serious Side Effects

- Ruptured spleen: pain in your left upper stomach or shoulder
- Serious allergic reaction: rash, trouble breathing, swelling of your tongue, lips, or throat
