- Linzess is a GC-C agonist and is used for the following:
- Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults
- Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults
- Functional constipation (FC) in children
How does Linzess work?
Linzess is a guanylate cyclase-C (GC-C) agonist. GC-C is a protein that works in the intestines. Linzess turns on GC-C, which helps raise the amount of fluid in your intestines and speed up the movement of food through your gut. These actions help you have regular bowel movements and possibly relieve belly pain.
How do I take Linzess?
The dose of Linzess depends on which type of chronic constipation you have.
Adults
- Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C): The typical dose is 290 mcg by mouth once daily
- Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC): The typical dose is 72 mcg or 145 mcg by mouth once daily
Children ages 6 to 17 years old
- Functional constipation (FC): The typical dose is 72 mcg by mouth once daily
Is it safe for me to take Linzess?
Linzess is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. This medication should not be used in:
- Patients less than 2 years of age.
- Patients with known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction

Common side effects of Linzess:
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain
- Gas
- Bloating and feeling full in the belly
Linzess Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Linzess. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
Severe diarrhea
Bloody stools or black stools that look like tar
Dehydration: confusion, dizziness, fainting, racing heart
