Climara replaces estrogen hormones that your body loses during menopause to relieve symptoms of menopause and prevent bone loss.
How do I take Climara?
The starting dose of Climara is started low and then increased as needed. It is a patch that is placed on the lower part of the stomach or upper part of the buttocks and replaced weekly.
Is it safe for me to take Climara?
Climara is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not take Climara if you are a woman who is over 35 years old and smoke. It should also not be used in women with any of the following medical conditions:
- Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Known, suspected, or history of breast cancer
- Known or suspected estrogen-dependent cancer
- Active or history of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
- Stroke or myocardial infarction (heart attack) within the past year
- Liver disease
- Allergy to any of the ingredients in Activella
- Known or suspected pregnancy

Climara Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Climara. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following such as allergic reactions; heart attack (hest pain or tightness, pain that radiates up to your shoulder, arm, neck, or jaw); stroke (sudden trouble talking, trouble walking, numbness on one side of your body or face, sudden, severe headaches); shortness of breath; breast lumps or pain; unusual or heavy vaginal bleeding; gallbladder problems (stomach pain, nausea or vomiting that doesn’t go away, fever, yellowing of the skin and eyes).
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Climara
The following medications may interact with Climara:
- Inducers of CYP3A4 such as St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) preparations, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, and rifampin may reduce the levels and effects of Climara
- Inhibitors of CYP3A4 such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir and grapefruit juice may increase the levels and effects of Climara
