ZYVOX is the brand name for linezolid and is available as an oral tablet and suspension.
What dosages is ZYVOX available in?
ZYVOX is available as a 600 mg oral tablet and a 100 mg/5 ml oral suspension.
What is ZYVOX used for?
ZYVOX is an oxazolidinone antibiotic and is used for the following:
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Hospital-acquired pneumonia
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) infections
How does ZYVOX work?
ZYVOX is an oxazolidinone antibiotic. It kills bacteria by stopping the growth and protein production of certain bacteria.
How do I take ZYVOX?
ZYVOX is typically dosed as follows:
- Community- or hospital-acquired pneumonia: The typical dose is 600 mg by mouth every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days
- Complicated skin and soft tissue infections: The typical dose is 600 mg by mouth every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days
- Uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections: For adults, the typical dose is 400 mg by mouth every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days. For children 12 years or older, the typical dose is 600 mg by mouth every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days
- Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) infection: The typical dose is 600 mg by mouth every 12 hours for 14 to 28 days
- Children 11 years or younger: Ask your child’s provider to see what the appropriate dose of linezolid (Zyvox) is for your child. The dose will depend on your child’s weight
Is it safe for me to take ZYVOX?
ZYVOX is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOIs), such as tranylcypromine (Parnate), iproclozide, nialamide, or phenelzine (Nardil), in the past 2 weeks.
ZYVOX Common Side Effects
Common side effects of ZYVOX:
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Vomiting
ZYVOX Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with ZYVOX. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severe allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
- Infectious diarrhea: Loose, watery stools (diarrhea), severe stomach pain or cramps, fever, nausea
- Serotonin syndrome: Sudden changes in thought, mood, and movement, abnomal heartbeat, vomiting, fever
- Lactic acidosis: Frequent nausea or vomiting, rapid breathing
