ZOCOR is the brand name for simvastatin and is available as an oral tablet.
What dosages is ZOCOR available in?
ZOCOR is available as a 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg oral tablet.
What is ZOCOR used for?
ZOCOR is a statin that is used for the following:
Prevention of heart or blood vessel problems (e.g., heart attack or stroke) in people at higher-risk for heart problems
Lower high “bad” cholesterol and triglyceride levels in certain people
How does ZOCOR work?
ZOCOR is a statin. The main way it works is by blocking an enzyme (protein) in your liver that makes cholesterol. As a result, ZOCOR lowers your “bad” cholesterol (called low-density lipoprotein, or LDL). ZOCOR can also raise your “good” cholesterol (called high-density lipoprotein, or HDL) levels and lower your triglyceride levels.
How do I take ZOCOR?
ZOCOR is dosed as follows:
- Adults: The typical dose ranges from 20 mg to 40 mg by mouth once daily in the evening
- Children age 10 years and older: The typical dose ranges from 10 mg to 40 mg by mouth once daily in the evening
Is it safe for me to take ZOCOR?
ZOCOR is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if any of the following apply to you:
- Taking ZOCOR with azole antifungals, macrolide antibiotics, certain antiviral medications, nefazodone, cyclosporine (Neoral, Gengraf, Sandimmune), or gemfibrozil (Lopid)
- Liver problems
ZOCOR Common Side Effects
Common side effects of ZOCOR:
- Cough, runny nose, and other symptoms of bronchitis
- Stomach pain
- Irregular heart beat
- Nausea, stomach pain ,and other symptoms of stomach inflammation
- Eczema (dry, itchy skin)
- Dizziness
- Muscle pain
ZOCOR Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with ZOCOR. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severe muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis): Dark brown urine, severe muscle weakness or pain, fever, tiredness
- Worsening liver problems or liver failure: swelling of your stomach, yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes, confusion, dark or brown urine

The following medications may interact with ZOCOR:
- See full prescribing information for details regarding concomitant use of ZOCOR with other drugs or grapefruit juice that increase the risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis
- Coumarin Anticoagulants: Obtain INR before ZOCOR initiation and monitor INR during ZOCOR dosage initiation or adjustment
- Digoxin: During ZOCOR initiation, monitor digoxin levels
