MEDICAL INFORMATION

Zanaflex Key Facts

What is Zanaflex?

Zanaflex is the brand name for tizanidine and is available as an oral tablet and capsule.

What dosages is Zanaflex available in?

Zanaflex is available as a 2 mg, 4 mg oral tablet and a 2 mg, 4 mg, and 6 mg oral capsule.

What is Zanaflex used for?

Zanaflex is an alpha-2 receptor agonist that is used to treat muscle stiffness and rigidity.

How does Zanaflex work?

Zanaflex is a type of muscle relaxer called an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist. It works by slowing down nerves in your spinal column that control muscle tone. When those nerves slow down, your muscles relax.

How do I take Zanaflex?

Zanaflex is typically started at 2 mg by mouth every 6 to 8 hours, as needed (up to 3 doses a day). If needed, your provider might raise your dose every few days, up to a total of 36 mg per day.
Your dose might be different if you have liver or kidney problems.

Is it safe for me to take Zanaflex?

Zanaflex is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you are taking a potent inhibitor of CYP1A2, such as fluvoxamine or ciprofloxacin.

Zanaflex Common Side Effects

  • Common side effects of Zanaflex:
  • Dry mouth
  • Sleepiness
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Zanaflex Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects are rare with Zanaflex. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.

Allergic reaction: trouble breathing, itchy skin or rash, closing of the throat or swelling of the tongue

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Zanaflex

The following medications may interact with Zanaflex:

  • Fluvoxamine: Concomitant use of fluvoxamine and Zanaflex is contraindicated. Changes in pharmacokinetics of tizanidine when administered with fluvoxamine resulted in significantly decreased blood pressure, increased drowsiness, and increased psychomotor impairment.
  • Ciprofloxacin: Concomitant use of ciprofoxacin and Zanaflex is contraindicated.
  • CYP1A2 Inhibitors other than Fluvoxamine and Ciprofloxacin: Because of potential drug interactions, concomitant use of Zanaflex with other CYP1A2 inhibitors, such as zileuton, fluoroquinolones other than strong CYP1A2
  • inhibitors (which are contraindicated), antiarrythmics (amiodarone, mexiletine, propafenone, and verapamil), cimetidine, famotidine, oral contraceptives, acyclovir, and ticlopidine) should be avoided. If their use is clinically necessary, therapy should be initiated with 2 mg dose and increased in 2–4 mg steps daily based on patient response to therapy. If adverse reactions such as hypotension, bradycardia, or excessive drowsiness occur, reduce or discontinue Zanaflex therapy.
  • Oral Contraceptives: Concomitant use of Zanaflex with oral contraceptives is not recommended. However, if concomitant use is clinically necessary, initiate Zanaflex with a single 2 mg dose and increase in 2–4 mg steps daily based on patient response to therapy. If adverse reactions such as hypotension, bradycardia, or excessive drowsiness occur
  • reduce or discontinue Zanaflex therapy.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol increases the overall amount of drug in the bloodstream after a dose of Zanaflex.
  • Other CNS Depressants: The sedative effects of Zanaflex with CNS depressants (e.g., benzodiazepines, opioids, tricyclic antidepressants) may be additive. Monitor patients who take Zanaflex with another CNS depressant for symptoms of excess sedation.
  • α2-adrenergic agonists: Because hypotensive effects may be cumulative, it is not recommended that Zanaflex be used with other α2-adrenergic agonist.
  • Who makes Zanaflex?

    Acorda Therapeutics Inc.

    Is Zanaflex safe in pregnancy?

Based on animal data, Zanaflex may cause fetal harm. You should talk to your healthcare provider before taking this medication if you are pregnant. Zanaflex should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

    • NowPatient is worth your time!

I do not leave reviews, due to time and a rare condition I have. I initially left a message, my call was returned within 2 hours or less. NowPatient offers 4 discount programs. I worked with Jay, he was genuine and wanted to help me all while giving me amazing customer service. Even though I didn't qualify, he gave me some suggestions and tips while encouraging me to follow up with the manufacturer along with other things I could do. This is the real deal, not a scam, and not a waste of your time. Amazing!! Thank you, Jay!

    • Excellent service

Cannot speak highly enough of the service and assistance I have received from NowPatient. I was dealing with a very kind and helpful clinician who couldn't do enough to assist. He was knowledgeable about the medication being prescribed and the consultation was thorough. There were some hurdles to overcome to receive the medication overseas and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommend.
