XOFIGO is the brand name for radium Ra 223 dichloride IV injections.
What dosages is XOFIGO available in?
XOFIGO is available as a single-dose vial at a concentration of 1,100 kBq/mL (30 microcurie/mL) at the reference date with a total radioactivity of 6,600 kBq/vial (178 microcurie/vial) at the reference date.
What is XOFIGO used for?
XOFIGO is a radiopharmaceutical that is used for metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer that’s spread to the bone only and causing symptoms.
How does XOFIGO work?
XOFIGO is a radiopharmaceutical. It’s made of the radioactive chemical radium-223. Radium-223 acts like calcium in the body and is taken into the bones. Advanced prostate cancer can sometimes spread to the bones. So when XOFIGO is absorbed into the bone, the radioactivity damages the tumor cells there, stopping them from growing and spreading.
How do I take XOFIGO?
Your treatment team will calculate your specific dose based on your body weight. The typical dose is 55 kBq/kg given as an infusion through the vein (IV) every 4 weeks for 6 doses. Note: kBq is a unit of radioactivity. Since this medication works by delivering radiation, the dose is described using units that measure radioactivity.
Is it safe for me to take XOFIGO?
XOFIGO is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you.
XOFIGO Common Side Effects
Common side effects of XOFIGO:
- Low red blood cell counts
- Low white blood cells
- Nausea
- Low platelet count
- Diarrhea
XOFIGO Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with XOFIGO. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Low blood cell counts: fever, chills, feeling very tired, dizziness, unusual bleeding or bruising

If you are denied Medicaid for XOFIGO, and you are still unable to afford your copay or co-insurance element (for example if you are in the coverage gap or Donut Hole) then you may be eligible for a federal support program like Low Income Subsidy. If you are uninsured or underinsured (for example, XOFIGO is not covered by your plan) and the drug savings options are not applicable or still unaffordable, then you can check Medicaid eligibility in your state by following the instructions at HealthCare.gov.

If you are denied and all else fails, and if you have been prescribed XOFIGO for an FDA-approved indication, you can call the pharmaceutical company to see if they have any other assistance programs.
I am commercially or privately insured and none of the XOFIGO prescription saving options are applicable or affordable for me, what can I do?
If your medication is not covered by your plan, you can you can appeal your insurance company’s decision. Sometimes, a formal appeal can result in the drug being covered if it is deemed medically necessary.
