MEDICAL INFORMATION
Wegovy Pills Key Facts
What is Wegovy Pills?
Wegovy Pills (semaglutide) is the first and only FDA-approved GLP-1 pill for weight loss, developed by Novo Nordisk. It’s a prescription medicine containing semaglutide that is taken once daily, as opposed to the injectable, once-weekly, version of Wegovy.
What dosages is Wegovy Pills available in?
The Wegovy pill uses a gradual dose escalation schedule. Your health care professional will start you on the 1.5 mg once-daily dose and gradually increase the dose every 30 days until you reach the 25 mg maximum dose. The dosing schedule includes: 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg, and 25 mg strengths.
What is Wegovy Pills used for?
Wegovy Pills are used for:
- Weight Loss & Long‑Term Weight Management
Wegovy Pills help adults with obesity or who are overweight (with at least one weight‑related medical problem such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol) to lose weight and maintain that weight loss. - Cardiovascular Risk Reduction
In adults who have established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight, Wegovy can be prescribed to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events (like heart attack, stroke, or death) when used alongside diet and exercise.
How does Wegovy Pills work?
Wegovy Pills contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. The FDA-approved Wegovy® pill has technology designed to facilitate absorption of semaglutide.
The medication works as part of a GLP-1 class mechanism to help with weight management.
In clinical trials, adults lost on average 33 lb (14% weight loss) based on an average starting weight of 235 lb with Wegovy Pills, compared to 6 lb (2.4% weight loss) with placebo.
How do I take Wegovy Pills?
Wake up and take one WEGOVY PILL with a sip of water (up to 4 ounces) on an empty stomach. Start your morning while waiting at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking or taking other oral medications.
Key instructions include:
- Take one pill by mouth with water (4 oz max) and not with other liquids. Don’t crush, cut, chew, or dissolve the pill
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other oral medications to give Wegovy® pill time to absorb
- Store pills in the closed Wegovy® bottle until you are ready to take one, not in another container
- Do not take more than 1 pill per day
- If you miss a dose, the missed dose should be skipped, and the next dose should be taken the following day

If you have Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage and none of the Wegovy Pills savings options are applicable or affordable for me, what can you do?
If you are insured with Medicare and the Wegovy Pills drug savings options are not applicable to you and still remain unaffordable, then you can check Medicaid eligibility in your state by following the instructions at HealthCare.gov.
The government site is easy to use and after you have selected your state, it will navigate you to the appropriate contact point to make the application. State Medicaid programs may cover the full cost of your medication.
People who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid are called ‘dual eligibles’.
If you are denied Medicaid for Wegovy Pills, and you are still unable to afford your copay or co-insurance element (for example if you are in the coverage gap or Donut Hole) then you may be eligible for a federal support program like Low Income Subsidy. To be eligible for Low Income Subsidy, you need to be a resident in one of the 50 States or the District of Columbia. You can check eligibility online at SSA Medicare D Extra Help.
