What is VELETRI used for?
VELETRI is a prostacyclin vasodilator and is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
How does VELETRI work?
VELETRI is a prostacyclin vasodilator. Prostacyclins work by relaxing muscles in the arteries (blood vessels), which leads to vasodilation. Vasodilation means that the blood vessels widen, which allows more blood to flow through them. In addition, prostacyclins prevent platelets, pieces of cells found in the blood, from sticking to each other. This also helps improve blood flow. PAH occurs when blood can’t flow freely through the arteries in your lungs. This raises the blood pressure in your lungs, causing your heart to have to work harder to send blood to your lungs for oxygen. VELETRI helps with PAH because it improves the blood flow in your arteries.
How do I take VELETRI?
VELETRI is an intravenous (IV) infusion that’s given through a pump programmed to deliver your dose over a certain period of time. Before starting VELETRI, your provider will typically insert a catheter into a large vein near the heart. Your care team will train you on how to use the pump at home. Your provider will calculate the dose based on your body weight. The typical starting dose is 2 nanograms (ng) per kg of body weight per minute (2 ng/kg/min). The dose can be adjusted by your provider based on your response to the medication.
Is it safe for me to take VELETRI?
VELETRI is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have any of the following:
- Congestive heart failure due to severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction
- Pulmonary edema
- Hypersensitivity to the drug or to structurally related compounds
VELETRI Common Side Effects
Common side effects of VELETRI:
- Flushing
- Headache
- Nausea/vomiting
- Low blood pressure
- Anxiety, nervousness, or agitation
- Chest pain
VELETRI Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with VELETRI. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Excess fluid in the lungs: shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, fatigue
- Bleeding problems: unusual or easy bleeding or bruising, vomiting or coughing up blood, blood in your urine or stool
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on VELETRI
The following medications may interact with VELETRI:
- Diuretics, antihypertensive agents, or other vasodilators: reduction in blood pressure
- Antiplatelet agents or anticoagulants: increase the risk of bleeding
- Patients on digoxin: elevations of digoxin concentrations clinically significant in patients prone to digoxin toxicity

It is not known if VELETRI will harm your unborn baby. VELETRI should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to fetus.

If you have Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage and none of the VELETRI savings options are applicable or affordable for me, what can you do?

If you are denied Medicaid for VELETRI, and you are still unable to afford your copay or co-insurance element (for example if you are in the coverage gap or Donut Hole) then you may be eligible for a federal support program like Low Income Subsidy. I am uninsured or underinsured and none of the VELETRI prescription saving options are applicable or affordable for me, what can I do?
If you are uninsured or underinsured (for example, VELETRI is not covered by your plan) and the drug savings options are not applicable or still unaffordable, then you can check Medicaid eligibility in your state by following the instructions at HealthCare.gov.
The government site is easy to use and you can select your state and it will navigate you to the appropriate contact point to make the application. State Medicaid programs may cover the full cost of your medication.
If you are denied and all else fails, and if you have been prescribed VELETRI for an FDA-approved indication, you can call the pharmaceutical company to see if they have any other assistance programs.
I am commercially or privately insured and none of the VELETRI prescription saving options are applicable or affordable for me, what can I do?
If your medication is not covered by your plan, you can you can appeal your insurance company’s decision. Sometimes, a formal appeal can result in the drug being covered if it is deemed medically necessary.
If you cannot afford your copay, then you can check Medicaid eligibility in your state by following the instructions at HealthCare.gov.
However, being privately insured might complicate your eligibility for Medicaid, as having private insurance may be considered in the financial eligibility assessment.

- Your income is below 400% of the federal poverty level
- VELETRI is prescribed for an approved FDA indication
- You live in and receive treatment in the United States or U.S. territories, even if you do not have U.S. citizenship
- You have Medicare insurance coverage that covers VELETRI
