Availability of vardenafil

Vardenafil is a prescription medication and is available in both the US and the UK.

FDA approval of vardenafil

Vardenafil has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).

Is vardenafil available in the UK on NHS?

Vardenafil is available in the UK with a National Health Service (NHS) prescription. It can be prescribed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Mechanism of action

Vardenafil belongs to a class of medications known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It works by relaxing the muscles and increasing blood flow to the penis, thereby helping to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual stimulation.

Uses of vardenafil

Vardenafil is primarily used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), which is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual activity. It is not intended for use in women or children.

Dosage of vardenafil

The dose of vardenafil may vary depending on the individual’s response to the medication and the severity of the erectile dysfunction. It is important to follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider. Vardenafil is available in tablet form in different strengths (such as 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg). The appropriate dosage will be determined by your healthcare provider based on your specific needs.

Forms of vardenafil

Vardenafil is available in tablet form.

Warnings and precautions for vardenafil

  • Vardenafil may have certain risks and potential side effects. It is important to discuss these with a healthcare provider before starting the medication
  • Vardenafil should not be used in combination with nitrates, as it may cause a severe drop in blood pressure
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, high or low blood pressure, other heart problems such as a heart attack or heart failure, angina (chest pain), stomach ulcers or a bleeding disorder, priapism, sickle cell anemia, leukemia, retinitis pigmentosa, or sudden severe vision loss caused by a blockage of blood flow
  • Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit-containing foods while taking vardenafil, as they may increase the side effects of vardenafil

Is it safe to take vardenafil if I am pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant?

Vardenafil is not indicated for use in women. It is intended for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men and should not be used by women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Is vardenafil safe to use while breastfeeding?

Vardenafil is not intended for use in women. It is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.

Side effects of vardenafil

Common side effects of vardenafil may include headache, hearing loss, flushing, stuffy or runny nose, upset stomach, and back pain. Serious side effects are rare but can occur. Seek medical attention if you have a life threatening allergic reaction. Symptoms include hives, trouble breathing, shortness of breath, sore throat, chest pain, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, skin rash, and severe skin reactions. Promptly report any adverse effects to a healthcare professional for medical advice.

Interactions with other drugs

Vardenafil may interact with certain medications, particularly nitrates, which are commonly used for the treatment of angina (chest pain), amiodarone, antifungals such as fluconazole, ketoconazole, itraconazole and voriconazole, clarithromycin, alpha blockers (such as alfuzosin, doxazosin, terazosin, or tamsulosin) to treat an enlarged prostate or high blood pressure (hypertension), finasteride, erythromycin, HIV protease inhibitors such as atazanavir, indinavir, ritonavir, and saquinavir, other medications for high blood pressure such as isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide dinitrate, or nitroglycerin, and other treatments for erectile dysfunction, phenytoin, rifabutin, or rifampin. It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the prescription drugs, over the counter nonprescription medication, salt substitutes, supplements, and vitamins you are taking to avoid potential adverse effects and drug interactions.

Similar drugs to vardenafil

Other PDE5 inhibitors, such as sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis), may be used as alternatives for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
