How does Vagifem work?
Vagifem replaces estrogen hormones that your body loses during menopause to relieve symptoms of menopause and prevent bone loss.
How do I take Vagifem?
Vagifem is dosed as follows: 1 insert into the vagina once a day for 2 weeks. After that, place 1 insert into the vagina twice a week (for example, Tuesday and Friday).
Is it safe for me to take Vagifem?
Vagifem is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not take Vagifem if you are a woman who is over 35 years old and smoke. It should also not be used in women with any of the following medical conditions:
- Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Known, suspected, or history of breast cancer
- Known or suspected estrogen-dependent cancer
- Active or history of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
- Stroke or myocardial infarction (heart attack) within the past year
- Liver disease
- Allergy to any of the ingredients in Activella
- Known or suspected pregnancy
Vagifem Common Side Effects
Common side effects of Vagifem include:
- Vaginal yeast infections
- Itching of the vagina or vulva area
- Back pain
- Diarrhea
Vagifem Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Vagifem. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Allergic reactions: trouble breathing, hives, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Heart attack: chest pain or tightness, pain that radiates up to your shoulder, arm, neck, or jaw
- Stroke: sudden trouble talking, trouble walking, or numbness on one side of your body or face, sudden, severe headache
- Blood clots: legs (cramps, swelling, pain, muscle tightness) and lungs (shortness of breath, trouble breathing, chest pain, cough)
- Breast lumps or pain
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Vagifem
The following medications may interact with Vagifem:
- Inducers of CYP3A4 such as St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) preparations, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, and rifampin may reduce the levels and effects of Vagifem
- Inhibitors of CYP3A4 such as erythromycin, clarithromycin
- ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir and grapefruit juice may increase the levels and effects of Vagifem
