How does Toviaz work?
Toviaz is an anticholinergic medication that blocks acetylcholine. This is a chemical in the body that affects different bodily functions, including telling the bladder muscles to tighten so you can urinate. By blocking acetylcholine, Toviaz relaxes the bladder muscles so you have better control over urination.
How do I take Toviaz?
Toviaz is dosed as follows: Overactive bladder (adults): The typical starting dose is 4 mg by mouth once a day. Your provider might raise your dose to 8 mg once a day depending on how you respond to the medication. Neurogenic detrusor overactivity (children ages 6 years and older, weighing at least 25 kg): The typical dose is 4 mg by mouth once a day. If needed, your child’s provider might raise their dose to 8 mg once a day depending on how your child responds to the medication. Your dose might differ if you have kidney problems or if you’re taking certain medications that interact with Toviaz.
Is it safe for me to take Toviaz?
Toviaz is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have any of the following:
Known or suspected hypersensitivity to Toviaz or any of its ingredients or to tolterodine tartrate tablets or tolterodine tartrate extended-release capsules.
- Urinary retention
- Gastric retention
- Uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma
Toviaz Common Side Effects
Common side effects of Toviaz:
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Urinary tract infection
- Upper respiratory tract infection
- Dry eyes
Toviaz Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Toviaz. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Angioedema (severe swelling): swelling of the face, arms or legs, lips, tongue, or throat
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Toviaz
The following medications may interact with Toviaz:
- Antimuscarinic Drugs: Coadministration of Toviaz with other antimuscarinic agents that produce dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, and other anticholinergic pharmacological effects may increase the frequency and/or severity of such effects
- CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Doses of Toviaz greater than 4 mg are not recommended in adult patients taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, and clarithromycin
