Toujeo is a brand-name prescription medication. It’s FDA-approved to treat type 1 or type 2 diabetes in adults and children ages 6 years and older. Toujeo contains insulin glargine, which is a long-acting insulin. This drug is given as a subcutaneous injection (an injection under your skin).

It’s common for people taking Toujeo to gain weight. That’s because insulin helps glucose move from your blood into your cells. And excess glucose may be stored as fat, leading to weight gain. Weight gain from insulin therapy tends to be around 4 lbs during the first year, but some people may gain 11 lbs or more.

Toujeo contains a higher concentration of insulin than Lantus. Each Lantus SoloStar pen contains 100 units of insulin in 1 mL of liquid — with a total of 300 units of insulin in each pen. Toujeo pens contain 300 units of insulin in 1 mL of liquid, making them three times as concentrated as a Lantus pen.

Your doctor may recommend that you first use an amount of Toujeo that’s one-third to one-half of your total daily insulin. This is based on your weight and is usually 0.2 to 0.4 units of insulin per kilogram (kg). * Your doctor will calculate the amount for you.

The slow release of Toujeo provides a steady insulin profile without peaks between meals and during the night, which reduces the risk of hypoglycaemia. You only need to take Toujeo once every 24 hours. You can take it any time during the day or night, preferably at the same time every day.

Prescription Toujeo is a long-acting man-made insulin used to control high blood sugar in adults and children who are 6 years of age and older with diabetes mellitus. Do not use Toujeo if you have low blood sugar or if you are allergic to insulin or any of the ingredients in Toujeo.

However, Basaglar and Lantus are considered equally effective and safe for treating diabetes. The American Diabetes Association does not recommend either drug over the other in its guidance for diabetes treatment. Do NOT use a double dose of your insulin. If you double a dose, this may cause low blood sugar levels.

Even though Toujeo is usually given once a day, some people may experience better blood sugar control if the dose is split and given twice a day (every 12 hours). You can administer Toujeo any time of the day or night, but preferably it should be given at approximately the same time every day.

Is weight gain a side effect of Tresiba and Lantus? Yes, weight gain is a common side effect of all insulins, including Tresiba and Lantus. These drugs are both long-acting insulins (also called basal insulins). Long-acting insulins help manage blood sugar overnight and between meals.

Ozempic and Tresiba are different types of diabetes medications. Ozempic is a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist and Tresiba is a long-acting human insulin analog. Side effects of Ozempic and Tresiba that are similar include diarrhea and stomach/abdominal upset or pain.
