How does SPRYCEL work?

How does SPRYCEL work?

SPRYCEL is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI). It blocks a certain protein in your body called BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase. This protein is found on cancer cells like CML and ALL and not on normal, healthy cells. It causes the cancer cells to grow and multiply. By blocking this protein, it kills cancer cells and stops their spread.

How do I take SPRYCEL?

How do I take SPRYCEL?

SPRYCEL is dosed as follows:

  • Adults with Ph+ CML: Dosing will depend on the phase of Ph+ CML you’re in. The typical dose starts at 100 mg or 140 mg by mouth once a day
  • Adults with Ph+ ALL: The typical dose is 140 mg by mouth once a day
  • Children with Ph+ CML or Ph+ ALL: Dosing will depend on the child’s weight. Dosage starts from 40 mg to 100 mg by mouth once a day

Your dose might differ if you’re taking certain medications that interact with SPRYCEL.

SPRYCEL Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects are rare with SPRYCEL. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.

  • Infection: repeated fevers, chills, cough, trouble breathing, severe diarrhea, vomiting, painful or frequent urination
  • Serious bleeds: bleeding or bruising that doesn’t stop or go away, large amount of bleeding, blood in the urine, throwing up blood, bloody or black and tarry stool
  • Heart problems: chest pain, racing heart, shortness of breath, swelling of legs or feet, sudden weight gain, fatigue, dizziness, weakness on one side of body, problems with vision or speech
  • Abnormal electrolyte levels and kidney problems: dark urine, not urinating as much as usual, pain on either side of the lower back, racing heart, muscle cramps or spasms, numbness, nausea, vomiting

  • Strong CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Dose reduction may be necessary

  • H2 Antagonists and Proton Pump Inhibitors: Avoid coadministration
