SOLIQUA Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Warnings & Dosing
What is SOLIQUA?
SOLIQUA is the brand name for insulin glargine and lixisenatide subcutaneous injection.
What dosages is SOLIQUA available in?
SOLIQUA is available as 100 units of insulin glargine per mL and 33 mcg of lixisenatide per mL in a 3 mL single-patient use pen.
What is SOLIQUA used for?
SOLIQUA is an insulin/GLP-1 agonist used to treat type 2 diabetes.
How does SOLIQUA work?
SOLIQUA is a combination of two medications that work together to lower blood sugar.
- Insulin glargine (a long-acting insulin) is a hormone that directly lowers sugar in the blood
- Lixisenatide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist. It tells your body to release more insulin, stops the body from releasing more sugar, and slows down digestion
How do I take SOLIQUA?
The typical starting dose is 15 units (equivalent to 15 units of insulin glargine with 5 mcg of lixisenatide) injected under the skin once a day, within an hour before the first meal of the day. The dose will be adjusted based on your blood sugar readings, up to a maximum dose of 60 units a day (equivalent to 60 units of insulin glargine with 20 mcg of lixisenatide).
Is it safe for me to take SOLIQUA?
SOLIQUA is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have symptoms of low blood sugar.
