SKYLA Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Warnings & Dosing
What is SKYLA?
SKYLA is the brand name for a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system.
What dosages is SKYLA available in?
SKYLA is available as intrauterine system consisting of a T-shaped polyethylene frame with a steroid reservoir containing 13.5 mg levonorgestrel.
What is SKYLA used for?
SKYLA is a progestin that is used to prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years.
How does SKYLA work?
SKYLA is a small device placed in the uterus that slowly releases a progestin hormone called levonorgestrel. This hormone prevents pregnancy by stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg. Levonorgestrel also makes it difficult for sperm to reach the egg and for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus.
How do I take SKYLA?
SKYLA will need to be placed inside your uterus by your provider at their office. Once placed, it can prevent pregnancy for 3 years.
Is it safe for me to take SKYLA?
SKYLA is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following:
- Pregnancy or suspicion of pregnancy
- Use as emergency contraception
- Certain abnormal uterine anatomy
- Acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or a history of PID
- Postpartum endometritis or infected abortion in the past 3 months
- Uterine or cervical cancer
- Breast cancer or other progestin-sensitive cancer
- Uterine bleeding without a known cause
- Untreated inflammation of the cervix or vagina, or other lower genital tract infections
- Liver disease or liver tumor
- A previous intrauterine device (IUD) that hasn’t been removed
SKYLA Common Side Effects
Common side effects of SKYLA:
- Vaginal inflammation or irritation
- Acne
- Stomach pain
- Ovarian cyst
- Headache
- Menstrual cramps
- Heavier menstrual bleeding
- Breast pain or discomfort
- Nausea
SKYLA Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with SKYLA. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Ectopic pregnancy: severe, unexplainable pelvic pain along with unusual vaginal bleeding
- Severe infection: fever, chills, confusion, fatigue
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on SKYLA
- No drug-drug interaction studies have been conducted with SKYLA. However, always let your physician and pharmacist know about any other medications or supplements (including prescribed and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and dietary or herbal supplements) that you are currently taking
Who makes SKYLA?

Is SKYLA safe in pregnancy?
The use of SKYLA is contraindicated in pregnancy or with a suspected pregnancy and SKYLA may cause adverse pregnancy outcomes. If you become pregnant with SKYLA in place, the likelihood of ectopic pregnancy is increased and there is an increased risk of miscarriage, sepsis, premature labor, and premature delivery. Remove SKYLA, if possible, if pregnancy occurs. If SKYLA cannot be removed, follow the pregnancy closely.
