ROCALTROL is the active form of vitamin D. It raises your vitamin D levels, which helps your body absorb more calcium. This raises your blood calcium levels.

ROCALTROL is dosed as follows:

  • Adults: The typical starting dose is 0.25 mcg by mouth daily. Your provider will check your blood calcium levels throughout therapy. They might raise your dose if your levels remain low
  • Children: Your child’s dose will depend on their age, weight, and the reason they’re taking calcitriol (Rocaltrol).

ROCALTROL is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication if you have hypercalcemia or
evidence of vitamin D toxicity.

  • Late-stage calcium toxicity: changes in urine, loss of appetite, light sensitivity, chest pain, racing heart
  • Allergic reaction: itching, rash, hives, swelling of lips

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on ROCALTROL

The following medications may interact with ROCALTROL:

  • Cholestyramine has been reported to reduce intestinal absorption of fatsoluble vitamins; as such it may impair intestinal absorption of ROCALTROL/
  • The coadministration of phenytoin or phenobarbital will not affect plasma concentrations of calcitriol, but may reduce endogenous plasma levels of 25(OH)D3 by inhibiting 25-hydroxylase in liver. Since endogenous synthesis of calcitriol will be inhibited, higher doses of Rocaltrol may benecessary if these drugs are administered simultaneously
  • Thiazides are known to induce hypercalcemia by the reduction of calcium excretion in urine
  • Some reports have shown that the concomitant administration of thiazides with Rocaltrol causes
  • hypercalcemia. Therefore, precaution should be taken when coadministration is necessary
  • Ketoconazole may inhibit both synthetic and catabolic enzymes of calcitriol. Reductions in serum endogenous calcitriol concentrations have been observed following the administration of 300 mg/day to 1200 mg/day ketoconazole for a week to healthy men. However, in vivo drug
  • interaction studies of ketoconazole with Rocaltrol have not been investigated
