Rifapentine is an antibiotic used to treat:

• Active tuberculosis (TB) infection
• Latent TB (you have TB bacteria in your body but you don’t have symptoms)

Rifapentine is a rifamycin antibiotic. It blocks an enzyme the bacteria need to eventually make proteins, so the bacteria can’t grow and spread.

Rifapentine is dosed as follows:

• Active TB (adults and children 12 years and older)
• Initial phase: The starting dose is 600 mg twice a week for two months. Separate doses by at least 72 hours (3 full days)
• Continuation phase: 600 mg once a week for the next 4 months
• For active TB, Rifapentine must be taken in combination with other anti-TB antibiotics
• Latent TB (adults and children 2 years and older)
• The dose is based on your weight, and should be taken once a week for 12 weeks. The maximum dose is 900 mg
• For latent TB, Rifapentine must be taken in combination with isoniazid

Rifapentine is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. • Protease Inhibitors and Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors.
• Hormonal Contraceptives: Use another means of birth control
• May increase metabolism and decrease the activity of drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 3A4 and 2C8/9. Dosage adjustments may be necessary if given concomitantly
