rifapentine is an antibiotic used to treat:
- Active tuberculosis (TB) infection
- Latent TB (you have TB bacteria in your body but you don’t have symptoms)
How does rifapentine work?
rifapentine is a rifamycin antibiotic. It blocks an enzyme the bacteria need to eventually make proteins, so the bacteria can’t grow and spread.
How do I take rifapentine?
rifapentine is dosed as follows:
- Active TB (adults and children 12 years and older)
- Initial phase: The starting dose is 600 mg twice a week for two months. Separate doses by at least 72 hours (3 full days)
- Continuation phase: 600 mg once a week for the next 4 months
- For active TB, rifapentine must be taken in combination with other anti-TB antibiotics
- Latent TB (adults and children 2 years and older)
- The dose is based on your weight, and should be taken once a week for 12 weeks. The maximum dose is 900 mg
- For latent TB, rifapentine must be taken in combination with isoniazid
