What is Revia?

Revia is the brand name for naltrexone and is available as an oral tablet.

What is Revia used for?

Revia is an opioid antagonist that is used to treat:

  • Alcohol use disorder
  • Opioid use disorder

How does Revia work?

Revia is an opioid antagonist. It blocks opioid receptors (signaling proteins) in your body and prevents you from feeling the effects of opioid medications and alcohol.

How do I take Revia?

For Alcohol use disorder: The typical recommended dose is 50 mg by mouth every day for up to 3 months. For Opioid use disorder: The typical starting dose is 25 mg by mouth every day. If you don’t experience signs of withdrawal, your provider might raise the dose to 50 mg every day.

Is it safe for me to take Revia?

Revia is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. Revia is contraindicated in:

  • Patients receiving opioid analgesics
    Patients currently dependent on opioids, including those currently maintained on opiate agonists (e.g., methadone) or partial agonists (e.g., buprenorphine)
  • Patients in acute opioid withdrawal (see WARNINGS)
  • Any individual who has failed the naloxone challenge test or who has a positive urine screen for opioids
  • Any individual with a history of sensitivity to Revia or any other components of this product. It is not known if there is any cross-sensitivity with naloxone or the
    phenanthrene containing opioids

Common side effects of Revia:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nervousness
  • Tiredness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Anxiety
  • Stomach pain or cramps
  • Joint and muscle pain

Revia Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects are rare with Revia. Serious Side Effects
Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.

  • Suicidal thoughts or actions
  • Liver injury: dark urine, feeling very tired, sudden nausea and vomiting, stomach pain on the upper right side, clay-colored stool, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
  • Lung problems (eosinophilic pneumonia): trouble breathing, chest pain, fever, cough

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Revia

The following medications may interact with Revia:

  • Revia antagonizes the effects of opioid-containing medicines, such as cough and cold remedies, antidiarrheal preparations, and opioid analgesics
