How does PROVERA work?
PROVERA is a progestin. It’s a lab-made version of the natural hormone progesterone. It regulates menstrual periods by helping to balance the levels of progesterone in the body.
When taken together with estrogen-containing medications, PROVERA helps protect the uterus from the effects of estrogen in postmenopausal women. It helps control the growth of the uterine lining to lower the risk of endometrial cancer.
How do I take PROVERA?
PROVERA is typically taken as 5 mg or 10 mg by mouth once a day for 5 to 14 days.
Is it safe for me to take PROVERA?
PROVERA is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. PROVERA should not be used in women with any of the following conditions:
- Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
- Known, suspected, or history of cancer of the breast
- Known or suspected estrogen- or progesterone-dependent neoplasia
- Active deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or a history of these conditions
- Active or recent (within the past year) arterial thromboembolic disease (for example, stroke and myocardial infarction)
- Known liver dysfunction or disease
- Missed abortion
- As a diagnostic test for pregnancy
- Known hypersensitivity to the ingredients in PROVERA tablets
- Known or suspected pregnancy.
PROVERA Common Side Effects
Common side effects of PROVERA:
- Spotting or breakthrough bleeding
- Heavier or lighter periods
- Breast tenderness
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Headache
PROVERA Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with PROVERA. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Unusual or heavy vaginal bleeding
- When taken with estrogen medications:
- Heart attack: chest pain or tightness; pain that spreads along to your shoulder, arm, neck, or jaw
- Stroke: sudden trouble talking or walking; numbness on one side of your body or face; shortness of breath; sudden, severe headaches
- Deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the leg): swelling, pain, muscle tightness, leg cramp
- Pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung): cough, chest pain, trouble breathing, racing heart
- Unusual changes to the breast: lumps, pain, swelling, changes in appearance
