How do I take Protopic?
Protopic is typically applied as a thin layer of tacrolimus (Protopic) to the affected skin twice daily.

Protopic is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you.

Serious side effects are rare with Protopic. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.

Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Protopic
- Formal topical drug interaction studies with Protopic have not been conducted. Based on its extent of absorption, interactions of Protopic with systemically administered drugs are unlikely to occur but cannot be ruled out. The concomitant administration of known CYP3A4 inhibitors in patients with widespread and/or erythrodermic disease should be done with caution. Some examples of such drugs are erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, fluconazole, calcium channel blockers and cimetidine.

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of topically administered tacrolimus in pregnant women. The experience with Protopic when used by pregnant women is too limited to permit assessment of the safety of its use during pregnancy.
