Periactin is an antihistamine and is used to treat the following:

- Sneezing, stuffy, or runny nose not caused by allergies or infections (vasomotor rhinitis)
- Eye allergies
- Mild skin allergies
- Allergic reactions to blood or the liquid part of blood (plasma)
- Skin reactions due to exposure to cold temperatures (cold urticaria)
- Allergic reactions when skin is scratched (dermatographia)
- Add-on therapy for severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
How does Periactin work?
Periactin is first-generation antihistamine. It works by blocking histamine, which is a chemical in your body that’s released during an allergic reaction. Blocking histamine helps ease allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, and itchy eyes or skin. Periactin also has anticholinergic effects, which can cause symptoms such as constipation, dry eyes, and difficulty urinating.
How do I take Periactin?
Periactin is typically taken as 4 mg by mouth three times a day. The typical recommended dose ranges from 4 mg to 20 mg daily.
Is it safe for me to take Periactin?
Periactin is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should not use this medication in newborn or premature infants or in the following:
- Angle-closure glaucoma
- Stenosing peptic ulcer

- Have taken an MAOI in the past 14 days

Common side effects of Periactin:
- Sleepiness
- Dizziness
- Loss of coordination
- Confusion

- Low blood pressure
- Difficulty urinating
- Dryness of nose, throat, and mouth
Periactin Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Periactin. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Signs of overdose: hallucinations, slow brain function, seizures, fast heartbeat, wide pupils, breathing problems
Excessive sleepiness or dizziness
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Periactin
The following medications may interact with Periactin:
- MAO inhibitors prolong and intensify the anticholinergic effects of antihistamines
- Antihistamines may have additive effects with alcohol and other CNS depressants, e.g., hypnotics, sedatives, tranquilizers, antianxiety agents

Two studies in pregnant women, have not shown that Periactin increases the risk of abnormalities when
