Nuedexta is the brand name for dextromethorphan HBr and quinidine sulfate tablets.

Nuedexta is available as a tablet with 20 mg of dextromethorphan hydrobromide and 10 mg of quinidine sulfate.

Nuedexta is a combination medication that is used to treat pseudobulbar affect (PBA). PBA occurs secondary to a variety of otherwise unrelated neurologic conditions, and is characterized by involuntary, sudden, and frequent episodes of laughing and/or crying.

Nuedexta has 2 medications. Dextromethorphan bromide balances out certain chemicals in the brain that affect mood and behavior while quinidine helps prevent dextromethorphan from being broken down too quickly in the body.

Nuedexta is typically taken once daily for 1 week and then increased to 1 tablet every 12 hours.

Nuedexta is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you.

Common side effects of Nuedexta include:

• Diarrhea
• Dizziness
• Cough
• Vomiting
• Weakness, lack of energy
• Swelling in your hands and feet

Serious side effects are rare with Nuedexta however they can include:

• Low platelets
• Serotonin syndrome
• Liver damage
• Abnormal heart rhythm

The following medications may interact with Nuedexta:

• desipramine
• paroxetine
• digoxin

Otsuka

Nuedexta hasn’t been well-studied in pregnancy or during breastfeeding. But animal studies suggest it can harm babies if taken by mothers during pregnancy. If you’re pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or are breastfeeding, talk to your provider about your options for PBA.
