What is Nexavar used for?
Nexavar is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor and is used for the following:
- Liver cancer that can’t be removed by surgery
- Advanced kidney cancer
- Advanced or metastatic differentiated thyroid cancer
How does Nexavar work?
Nexavar is a targeted anticancer medication known as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI). It targets and blocks multiple proteins in cancer cells called kinases that are involved in tumor growth and tumor blood supply. By blocking these proteins, Nexavar stops tumor growth.
How do I take Nexavar?
The typical dose is 400 mg by mouth twice daily without food.
Is it safe for me to take Nexavar?
Nexavar is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. Nexavar is contraindicated in patients with known severe hypersensitivity to sorafenib or any other component of Nexavar. Nexavar in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel is contraindicated in patients with squamous cell lung cancer.

Nexavar Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Nexavar. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Heart problems: chest pounding, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, feeling faint or lightheaded, swelling in the legs
- Serious bleeding: unusual bleeding, bleeding that’s difficult to stop, easy bruising, blood in urine or stool
- Serious skin reactions: skin rash, redness, blistering, pain, swelling
- Gut damage: fever, chills, intense stomach pain or cramps, bloating
- Serious liver problems: right-sided stomach pain, tiredness, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes

The following medications may interact with Nexavar:
- Strong CYP3A Inducers: Avoid strong CYP3A4 inducers

Is Nexavar safe in pregnancy?
Nexavar may harm your unborn baby. Tell your healthcare
provider right away if you become pregnant during treatment with Nexavar.
For females who are able to become pregnant:
- Your healthcare should do a pregnancy test before you start treatment with Nexavar
- Use effective birth control (contraception) during your treatment with Nexavar and for 6 months after the last dose of Nexavar
For males with female partners who are able to become pregnant:
- Use effective birth control (contraception) during your treatment with Nexavar and for 3 months after the last dose of Nexavar
