Narcan is the brand name for naloxone HCl and is available as a nasal spray.

What dosages is Narcan available in?

Narcan is available as a nasal spray that contains 4 mg of naloxone hydrochloride per 0.1 mL.

What is Narcan used for?

Narcan is a life-saving medication that’s used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

How does Narcan work?

Narcan is an opioid antagonist.It works by blocking opioids from binding to the opioid receptors. Doing this reverses the symptoms of an opioid overdose, such as slowed breathing, extreme sleepiness, and low blood pressure.

How do I take Narcan?

You should call 911 first, then give Narcan. The usual dose is 1 spray in one nostril as a single dose. If the person doesn’t respond after 2 to 3 minutes, spray a second dose in the other nostril using a new nasal spray. Continue to repeat the dose with a new nasal spray every 2 to 3 minutes if the person doesn’t respond, until medical help arrives.

Is it safe for me to take Narcan?

Narcan is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following:

  • Hypersensitivity to naloxone hydrochloride

Common side effects of Narcan:

  • Headache
  • Dry nose
  • Nasal congestion

Narcan Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects are rare with Narcan. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Opioid withdrawal symptoms: aggressive behavior, pain, fast heartbeat, sweating, irritability, vomiting
