MONOVISC is a viscoelastic and is used to treat pain due to osteoarthritis of the knee.
How does MONOVISC work?
MONOVISC is a viscoelastic. It’s similar to a substance that’s naturally found in the connective tissues in your body. When it’s injected into the knee, it helps lubricate your knee joint so that you can move it smoothly. This can reduce pain from osteoarthritis in your knee.
How do I take MONOVISC?
There are many injectable injectable hyaluronic acid products available. Your provider will ensure you’re getting your injections at the right dose and at the right time, depending on your product. In general, this medication is injected intraarticularly into your knee once weekly for 1 to 5 weeks.
Is it safe for me to take MONOVISC?
MONOVISC is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you.
- Do not administer to patients with known hypersensitivity (allergy) to hyaluronate preparations.
- Do not administer to patients with known hypersensitivity (allergy) to gram positive bacterial proteins
- Do not inject MONOVISC in the knees of patients with infections or skin diseases in the area of the injection site or joint
- Do not administer to patients with known systemic bleeding disorders

Common side effects of MONOVISC:
- Joint pain and swelling
- Back pain
- Muscle and bone pain
- Injection site reaction (redness, swelling)
MONOVISC Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with MONOVISC. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Severe allergic reaction: rash, trouble breathing, swelling of lips, tongue, or throat
