How does Memantine /Donepezil work?
Memantine /Donepezil is a combination of two medications that treats moderate-to-severe dementia in people with Alzheimer’s disease. Memantine (an NMDA antagonist) lowers the activity of certain proteins in your brain. Donepezil (an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor) raises the levels of acetylcholine in the brain. These two medications work together to lower the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.
How do I take Memantine /Donepezil?
Memantine /Donepezil is dosed as follows:
- If your condition is stable on donepezil only: The typical starting dose is 7 mg/10 mg (memantine/donepezil) by mouth once per day in the evening. Your dose will be slowly raised in 7 mg increments until you reach 28 mg/10 mg (memantine/donepezil) once per day
- If your condition is stable on both donepezil and memantine (separately): The typical starting dose is 28 mg/10 mg (memantine/donepezil) by mouth once per day in the evening
Your dose may differ if you have kidney problems.
