Liletta is the brand name for levonorgestrel and is available as an intrauterine system.
What dosages is Liletta available in?
Liletta is available as one intrauterine system consisting of a T-shaped polyethylene frame with a drug reservoir containing 52 mg LNG, packaged within a sterile inserter.
What is Liletta used for?
Liletta is a progestin and is used for the following:
- Prevent pregnancy for up to 8 years
- Relieve heavy menstrual periods for up to 5 years
How does Liletta work?
Liletta is a small device placed in the uterus that slowly releases a progestin hormone called levonorgestrel. This hormone prevents pregnancy by stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg. Levonorgestrel also makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus and for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus. Liletta works to treat heavy periods by thinning the lining of your uterus.
How do I take Liletta?
Your provider will place Liletta IUD inside the uterus at their office.
- Prevent pregnancy: Liletta IUD will stay in place for up to 8 years. Then, your provider will remove the IUD at their office
- Heavy menstrual bleeding: Liletta IUD will stay in place for up to 5 years. Then, your provider will remove the IUD at their office
Is it safe for me to take Liletta?
Liletta is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. If you have any of the following conditions or if any of the following apply to you, let your healthcare provider know because Liletta will not be safe for you to take.
- Pregnancy or suspicion of pregnancy
- Use as emergency contraception
- Certain abnormal uterine anatomy
- Acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or a history of
- PID
- Postpartum endometritis or infected abortion in the past 3 months
- Uterine or cervical cancer
- Breast cancer or other progestin-sensitive cancer
- Uterine bleeding without a known cause
- Untreated inflammation of the cervix or vagina, or other lower genital tract infections
- Liver disease or liver tumor
- A previous intrauterine device (IUD) that hasn’t been removed
Liletta Common Side Effects
Common side effects of Liletta:
- Vaginal yeast infections
- Vaginal bacteria infections
- Acne
- Nausea or vomiting
- Headache
- Painful intercourse
- Anxiety
Liletta Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with Liletta. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Ectopic pregnancy: severe, unexplainable pelvic pain along with unusual vaginal bleeding
- Severe infection: fever, chills, confusion, fatigue
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on Liletta
No drug-drug interaction studies have been conducted with Liletta. However, always let your physician and pharmacist know about any other medications or supplements (including prescribed and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and dietary or herbal supplements) that you are currently taking.
