What is KYLEENA?
KYLEENA is the brand name for a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system.
What dosages is KYLEENA available in?
KYLEENA is available as an intrauterine system consisting of a T-shaped polyethylene frame with a steroid reservoir containing 19.5 mg levonorgestrel, packaged within a sterile inserter.
What is KYLEENA used for?
KYLEENA is a progestin and is used to prevent pregnancy for up to 5 years.
How does KYLEENA work?
KYLEENA is a small device placed in the uterus that slowly releases a progestin hormone called levonorgestrel. This hormone prevents pregnancy by stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg. Levonorgestrel also makes it difficult for sperm to reach the egg and for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus.
How do I take KYLEENA?
KYLEENA will need to be placed inside the uterus by your provider at their office. Once placed, it can prevent pregnancy for 5 years.
Is it safe for me to take KYLEENA?
KYLEENA is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not use this medication in the following.
- Pregnancy or suspicion of pregnancy. Cannot be used for post-coital contraception (emergency contraception).
- Congenital or acquired uterine anomaly if it distorts the uterine cavity
- Acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or a history of PID unless there has been a subsequent intrauterine pregnancy
- Postpartum endometritis or infected abortion in the past 3 months
- Known or suspected uterine or cervical malignancy.
- Known or suspected breast cancer or other progestin-sensitive cancer
- Uterine bleeding of unknown etiology
- Untreated acute cervicitis or vaginitis or other lower genital tract infections
- Acute liver disease or liver tumor (benign or malignant).
Increased susceptibility to pelvic infection.
A previous intrauterine device (IUD) that has not been removed - Hypersensitivity to any component of KYLEENA
KYLEENA Common Side Effects
Common side effects of KYLEENA:
- Vaginal inflammation or irritation
- Ovarian cyst
- Acne
- Stomach cramps
- Headaches
- Breast discomfort or pain
- Changes in menstrual bleeding
KYLEENA Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects are rare with KYLEENA. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following.
- Ectopic pregnancy: severe, unexplainable pelvic pain along with unusual vaginal bleeding
- Severe infection: fever, chills, confusion, fatigue
Effects of other drugs, drug classes and over-the-counter products on KYLEENA
- No drug-drug interaction studies have been conducted with KYLEENA. However, always let your physician and pharmacist know about any other medications or supplements (including prescribed and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and dietary or herbal supplements) that you are currently taking
Who makes KYLEENA?
Bayer Healthcare
Is KYLEENA safe in pregnancy?
Remove KYLEENA if pregnancy occurs with KYLEENA in place. If pregnancy occurs, there is increased risk of ectopic pregnancy including loss of fertility, pregnancy loss, septic abortion (including septicemia, shock and death), and premature labor and delivery.
